Chapter 1: The Words Marcus Feared

Marcus Thorne had watched men lose fortunes without blinking.
He had sat across from prosecutors, hostile board members, and rival billionaires while they threatened to dismantle everything his family had built.
Nothing had ever frightened him like the security footage playing inside the hospital control room.
On the screen, Isabella shoved Khloe backward.
Marcus watched his pregnant wife strike the marble table.
He watched Isabella walk toward her.
He watched the red heel slam into Khloe’s side.
The room around him went silent.
Dr. Gabriel Vale, Khloe’s uncle and chairman of the hospital network, stood beside the security console with both hands clenched behind his back.
“Save three copies,” Gabriel ordered. “Send one to hospital counsel, one to the police, and one to my private server.”
Marcus turned sharply.
“Wait.”
Gabriel looked at him.
Marcus immediately realized how terrible the word sounded.
Khloe was being rushed into emergency surgery, and he had just asked the only man protecting the evidence to wait.
Gabriel’s expression hardened.
“Why?”
Marcus looked back at the screen.
The footage had captured more than the attack.
Isabella’s voice was faint, but the microphone above the suite entrance had recorded every word.
Khloe was on the floor, holding her stomach, when Isabella leaned closer.
“You should have disappeared with your parents,” she whispered. “That night was supposed to end your entire bloodline.”
Marcus stopped breathing.
Gabriel slowly turned toward him.
“What did she mean?”
“I don’t know.”
The lie came too quickly.
Gabriel heard it.
So did Elaine Parker, the event coordinator who had followed Marcus into the suite and now stood near the doorway.
On the screen, Isabella glanced toward the broken glass.
Then she reached inside her purse and removed a black access card.
She dropped it beside Khloe’s hand.
The camera caught the silver initials embossed across its surface.
M.T.
Marcus Thorne.
Gabriel stared at the card.
“That belongs to you.”
Marcus said nothing.
The security technician paused the recording.
The image froze on Isabella standing over Khloe while Marcus’s personal access card rested on the floor between them.
Gabriel stepped closer.
“You have ten seconds to tell me why the woman who attacked my niece was carrying your private hospital key.”
Marcus looked at the operating-room status monitor.
The red light remained on.
Khloe and their unborn daughter were somewhere behind those doors, fighting to survive.
And the secret Marcus had buried for six years had finally reached the surface.
“It wasn’t an affair,” he said quietly.
Gabriel’s eyes turned colder.
“That was not what I asked.”
May you like
Marcus faced him.
“I gave Isabella the card.”
