Marcus held the press conference forty-eight hours later.
The board begged him to remain silent.
Corporate attorneys warned that disclosure would collapse the company’s stock, trigger criminal investigations, and expose the Thorne family to billions in civil claims.
Marcus listened.
Then he walked to the podium.
Khloe watched from Ava’s hospital room.
Their daughter slept inside the incubator, one tiny hand resting against the clear wall.
Marcus appeared on every television network in the country.
“My name is Marcus Thorne,” he began. “For six years, I withheld information connected to the deaths of Samuel and Evelyn Vale.”
Khloe did not blink.
Marcus admitted that he had investigated her before meeting her.
He admitted marrying her without revealing his family’s connection to her parents.
He admitted giving Isabella the hospital access card.
He disclosed Adrian’s survival and the illegal fertility procedure.
Then he announced that every internal Thorne record would be surrendered to federal investigators.
The company’s value began collapsing before he finished speaking.
Reporters shouted questions.
“Did you marry Khloe Vale out of guilt?”
“Is Ava Thorne your biological daughter?”
“Did your wife know her father participated in the trials?”
Marcus gripped the podium.
“I will not use the crimes of dead men to escape responsibility for my own choices.”
A reporter called out.
“Are you still Ava’s father?”
Marcus looked directly into the camera.
“Yes.”
Khloe felt tears reach her eyes.
Not because she had forgiven him.
She had not.
But because Ava would eventually see the recording.
She would know that when the entire world questioned who her father was, Marcus had answered without hesitation.
Federal agents arrested three former executives that afternoon.
Gabriel resigned as hospital chairman and surrendered evidence of his own involvement.
Isabella pleaded guilty to aggravated assault, evidence theft, and conspiracy.
Her attorneys argued coercion.
Khloe submitted the security footage.
She also submitted the records showing Adrian had manipulated Isabella since she was a teenager.
Some people called Khloe compassionate.
Others called her foolish.
She rejected both descriptions.
“The truth does not become weaker because it is complicated,” she told the court.
Adrian faced charges involving homicide, medical fraud, conspiracy, and unlawful reproductive procedures.
Marcus was not immediately charged, but the investigation remained open.
That evening, he entered Khloe’s hospital room carrying divorce papers.
She looked at them.
“You signed?”
“Yes.”
“You aren’t going to fight me?”
“No.”
“What about Ava?”
Marcus’s voice nearly failed.
“I will accept whatever access you believe is safe.”
Khloe studied the man she had loved.
The man who had deceived her.
The man who had helped save the evidence that destroyed his own family.
She signed the papers.
Marcus turned to leave.
“Wait,” she said.
He stopped.

“She needs a father.”
