CHAPTER 5 — The Last Morning of the Family

Lily survived.

Barely.

The doctor called it exposure, sedation traces, and shock. Words that didn’t belong in a child’s sentence.

I sat beside her hospital bed for two days without moving.

Marcus stayed behind me like a shadow that refused to leave.

No one from my family was allowed inside.

Not my mother.

Not my father.

Not Vanessa.

On the third day, police returned with warrants.

On the fourth day, charges were filed.

Child endangerment.

Abuse.

Attempted homicide.

The words didn’t feel real until I heard them read aloud in court.

Vanessa didn’t look at me when they led her out.

My mother did.

For the first time, she looked afraid.

My father didn’t look at anyone.

Not even himself.

When the judge announced remand, I realized something strange.

I wasn’t shaking anymore.

Because grief had already finished its work inside me.

It had burned through everything soft.

Only something colder remained.

That night, Lily woke up for the first time.

She looked at me, confused.

“Mommy… why does my arm hurt?”

I held her hand carefully.

And I told her the only truth left in me.

“Because someone forgot what love is supposed to do.”

May you like

Outside the hospital window, dawn broke over the city.

And for the first time that week, it felt like the world was finally learning how to begin again.
