CHAPTER 4 — The House That Pretended

By noon, the house was surrounded.

Not just police.

Child services.

Medical investigators.

Neighbors stood behind caution tape like spectators at a fire they were glad wasn’t theirs.

Inside, everything still looked perfect.

The birthday decorations were still up.

The cake was still untouched.

Emma’s pink balloons still floated gently in the air conditioning.

It looked like a celebration that hadn’t realized it was over.

Vanessa was the first to break.

“It was a joke,” she said, voice trembling now. “We didn’t— we weren’t—”

“Where is Lily?” I asked.

No one answered.

Because the truth was no longer about words.

It was about intent.

My mother was finally restrained when she tried to leave the kitchen.

She wasn’t crying.

She was angry.

“Do you know what she did to this family?” she snapped at me. “That child ruined—”

Marcus stepped forward.

For the first time since I had known him, his voice wasn’t calm.

It was lethal.

“Your granddaughter is in a hospital fighting for her life.”

Silence hit the room like a physical force.

Even Vanessa stopped breathing.

May you like

Because suddenly, it wasn’t about discipline anymore.

It was about survival.
