CHAPTER 3 — The Footage

The police didn’t hesitate.

They sealed the backyard before the ambulance even left the driveway.

I sat in the passenger seat of Marcus’s car while my hands kept shaking in patterns I couldn’t control. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Lily’s bracelet under the garbage.

Silver.

Bright.

Wrong in that darkness.

At the station, the detective played the footage in silence.

Black-and-white security video.

Backyard.

6:42 a.m.

Vanessa walked across the frame carrying Lily.

My breath stopped.

My mother appeared next—opening the dumpster lid.

Slowly.

Calmly.

Like she was throwing away something already decided.

I made a sound I didn’t recognize as human.

Marcus grabbed my wrist—not to stop me, but to keep me upright.

The detective didn’t look away from the screen.

Vanessa’s voice came through the audio.

“She’ll stop crying if she learns her place.”

My father stood at the edge of the frame.

Watching.

Not moving.

Not speaking.

Just watching.

When the footage ended, the room stayed silent longer than it should have.

Then the detective said one thing:

“We have enough.”
