Chapter 10 - THE MAN ON THE PHONE
The unidentified man heard on Ava’s prepaid phone was finally identified.
Victor Lane.
Dean’s private investigator at North Gate.
He denied knowing Dean planned to cause any injury.
He said his job was to document Laura’s supposed negligence.
Then detectives showed him the recording.
Victor’s own voice.
“Just make sure the next hospital record says she fell while Laura was responsible.”
He went quiet.
“That sounds bad.”
Detective Moreno replied.
“It sounds accurate.”
Victor asked for an attorney.
Two days later, he began cooperating.
Dean had paid North Gate more than $63,000.
Much of it came from the Ava Mercer Trust.
Victor admitted the objective.
Create enough documentation to support emergency custody.
Then seek replacement of Laura as trustee.
Then challenge restrictions on trust distributions.
“Did Dean intend to hurt Ava?”
Moreno asked.
Victor shook his head.
“Not from anything he told me.”
“He wanted accidents documented.”
“Accidents happen.”
“His phrase.”
That distinction mattered.
Dean might not have planned the fractured arm.
But he had built a system that rewarded injury.
Every bruise became useful.
Every fall became leverage.
Every trip to a doctor became another paragraph against Laura.
