Chapter 10 - THE MOTHER BEHIND THE EMPIRE

Marcus stopped ten feet from Victoria.

For the first time in his life, he saw his mother without the protection of denial.

She was not a difficult woman defending tradition.

She was the architect of the conspiracy.

“You helped Isabella attack Khloe.”

Victoria kept the gun aimed at his chest.

“Isabella became emotional.”

“You replaced medication.”

“Dr. Voss handled medical decisions.”

“You forged the guardianship petition.”

“I protected the succession.”

Marcus placed the trust document on the floor.

“You tried to steal my child.”

“I tried to keep the Thorne name from passing into weak hands.”

Elaine struggled against the restraints.

Owen stood behind her with one hand on her shoulder.

Marcus looked at him.

“How long have you worked for Lorenzo?”

Owen smiled.

“I work for whoever understands value.”

“You were my friend.”

“I was your employee.”

“That was not how I treated you.”

“No.”

Owen’s expression darkened.

“You treated me worse.”

Marcus had inherited authority Owen believed he deserved.

Owen had built financial systems, negotiated acquisitions and protected the company through crises.

Marcus received the headlines.

Resentment made him useful to Victoria and Lorenzo.

They promised him permanent control after Marcus was declared incapacitated.

“Release Elaine,” Marcus said.

“Sign the trust amendment.”

The document transferred Marcus’s voting shares to Victoria and granted Owen executive authority.

In exchange, Victoria promised Khloe could keep custody of the child.

Marcus knew the promise was worthless.

He picked up the pen.

At the hospital, Khloe watched the hidden broadcast on Elaine’s laptop.

Nathaniel stood beside her.

Federal agents waited for Khloe’s signal.

Marcus signed the first page.

Victoria relaxed slightly.

“You finally understand.”

“No.”

Marcus looked toward the hidden camera.

“I finally understand what this family cost everyone around it.”

He dropped the pen.

Elaine threw herself sideways.

The chair struck Owen’s knees.

Marcus rushed Victoria.

The gun fired.

The bullet hit Marcus beneath the shoulder.

Khloe screamed at the screen.

Federal agents entered the hotel.

Owen grabbed Elaine and dragged her toward the elevator.

Victoria stood over Marcus.

“You could have had everything.”

He pressed one hand against the wound.

“I had everything.”

She raised the gun again.

Before she could fire, Elaine’s voice echoed from the upper level.

“Mrs. Thorne.”

Victoria turned.

Elaine held Owen’s phone.

The screen displayed an active international transfer.

Owen had been moving money out of Victoria’s accounts during the confrontation.

He had never intended to share power.

Victoria aimed at him instead.

Owen pushed Elaine toward the railing and ran.

The old floor beneath him collapsed.

He fell through rotting wood into the ballroom below.

The gun slid from Victoria’s hand.

Agents surrounded her.

Marcus remained conscious long enough to ask one question.

“Did Khloe see everything?”

Elaine knelt beside him.

“Yes.”

May you like

Marcus closed his eyes.

“Then she knows I did not sign.”
