Chapter Thirteen The Chase Through the Storm

Rain hammered Audrey's windshield as she drove along the winding highway outside Oakhaven Springs.
She had only one destination in mind.
Her mother's old lake house.
A place where no one would think to look for her.
She wanted silence.
She wanted distance.
Most of all...
She wanted to forget the wedding that had shattered her heart.
Behind her, a pair of headlights remained at the same distance for miles.
At first, she dismissed them.
Then they matched every turn.
Every lane change.
Every stop.
A chill crept down her spine.
She reached for her phone.
No signal.
The road narrowed as dense woods surrounded both sides.
Suddenly—
The car behind her accelerated.
Its headlights flooded her rearview mirror.
The vehicle slammed into her bumper.
Audrey screamed as her steering wheel jerked violently.
Another impact.
Metal groaned.
Her car spun onto the gravel shoulder and struck a guardrail.
The engine stalled.
Before she could react, the driver's door was yanked open.
Emily Carson stood in the rain.
Her face was calm.
Almost peaceful.
"I told you," Emily whispered.
"You were never supposed to marry him."
At that same moment...
Julian burst into the Harper house.
"She's gone."
Clara looked up.
"What happened?"
"I found her motel room."
"It was empty."
His phone rang.
Detective Brooks.
"We found Emily."
"Where?"
"More importantly..."
May you like
"So did Audrey."
Julian's blood turned cold.
