Chapter 19 - MY OWN ANNIVERSARY

Three years after the slap, I hosted dinner at my house.

Not a wedding anniversary.

An anniversary for Hayes Interiors.

Fifteen years.

My employees came.

My parents.

Lily.

Owen.

Caroline.

Even Nathan dropped the children off and stayed for one drink because I invited him.

The dining table was covered in food.

But I did not cook all of it.

That alone felt revolutionary.

We catered.

From Carla’s company.

The former Cole Family Catering had been renamed.

Oak & Table Events.

Employee-owned majority.

Carla ran it.

Judith hated the name change.

Everyone else survived.

During dinner, one of my junior designers reached for a serving bowl.

I stood automatically.

“I’ll get it.”

Lily grabbed my wrist.

“No.”

I looked at her.

“You’re eating.”

The room laughed.

I sat back down.

A tiny moment.

But I understood exactly what it meant.

You serve the family before you feed yourself.

Vanessa’s sentence had lived in my body longer than I realized.

Always get up.

Always help.

Always make everyone comfortable first.

Lily pushed the bowl toward my employee herself.

Then whispered.

“See?”

“I see.”

I ate while my food was still hot.

That should not have felt like freedom.

It did.

Later, Nathan stood near the doorway.

“Happy anniversary.”

I smiled.

“Thanks.”

He looked at the house.

“You built a good life.”

“So did you.”

He nodded.

“Different than I expected.”

“Same.”

Then he asked.

“Do you ever think about that dinner?”

“Yes.”

“Me too.”

He looked ashamed.

“I thought silence was neutral.”

I shook my head.

“It never is when someone is being hurt.”

Nathan nodded.

“I know.”

Then he left.

No drama.

May you like

No longing glance.

Just two people who once loved each other and finally understood the sentence that ended them.
