Chapter 10 - THE BUSINESS WAS ALREADY FAILING

The forensic accountant finished reviewing Cole Family Catering.
Judith had lied.
Vanessa had lied.
Nathan had believed parts of both.
The business was not failing because of one refrigerator.
Or inflation.
Or a slow wedding season.
It was failing because Vanessa had expanded too aggressively.
Second kitchen.
Luxury event division.
Custom rental inventory.
Three delivery trucks.
A downtown tasting room.
All funded through debt.
Then she hired herself at a salary almost twice what the company could support.
Judith took distributions too.
Nathan’s secret cash covered holes.
My home-equity loan delayed collapse.
It did not solve anything.
Caroline showed me the balance sheet.
“They need another four hundred thousand within six months.”
I laughed.
“So even if I legitimize the loan?”
“They’re still in trouble.”
Judith’s demand that I save thirty-two jobs was another incomplete story.
Saving the company required restructuring.
Selling assets.
Cutting family compensation.
Possibly closing the tasting room.
Things Vanessa refused to do.
She preferred another Emily payment.
Then one of their employees contacted me.
Her name was Carla Mendes.
She managed payroll.
“I heard about the loan.”
“How?”
“Vanessa blamed you in a staff meeting.”
Of course.
“What did she say?”
“That you froze company funding because you’re angry about a family disagreement.”
I breathed slowly.
“Did she mention the forged signature?”
“No.”
Carla continued.
“I have records you should see.”
Judith and Vanessa had been charging personal expenses to the company.
Vacations.
Clothes.
Home repairs.
Judith’s kitchen renovation.
Vanessa’s luxury apartment deposit.
Nathan knew some.
Not all.
Carla had complained.
Vanessa threatened to fire her.
I told Carla to speak with investigators and her own attorney.
Then she said.
“Mrs. Cole.”
“Emily.”
“Your money kept our paychecks from bouncing last year.”
I did not know.
Nathan had transferred seventy thousand from our joint savings.
He told me the account dropped because of tax payments.
Another lie.
The employees Vanessa used to guilt me had already been protected by my money without my knowledge.
That ended any remaining temptation to rescue the business blindly.
I proposed something different through the attorneys.
Independent restructuring.
Family members reduce control.
Employees protected where possible.
Fraudulent debt treated as family liability.
Vanessa rejected it within one hour.
Her response.
I BUILT THIS COMPANY.
Judith had said the same.
Nathan too, in quieter ways.

Everyone wanted credit for building.
Nobody wanted responsibility for the bill.
