CHAPTER 17 – The Grave With No Name

The cemetery was nearly empty when the sun rose.

A cold mist drifted across the rows of weathered headstones, muting every sound except the crunch of gravel beneath Detective Laura Bennett's boots.

Two patrol cars blocked the entrance.

Richard, Vivienne, Dominic, Samuel, and the forensic team followed close behind.

The coordinates from Theodore's hospital ledger had led them to one specific location.

Section C.

Row 11.

Plot 27.

There was no headstone.

Only a small granite marker engraved with a single word.

UNKNOWN

Laura compared the GPS coordinates one last time.

"This is it."

Richard frowned.

"An unmarked grave?"

Samuel slowly nodded.

"Theodore once told me..."

"'Some truths are buried twice.'"

Vivienne looked down at the ground.

"What are we looking for?"

Richard answered quietly.

"I don't think we're looking in the grave."

"I think we're looking under the marker."

A forensic archaeologist carefully lifted the granite slab.

Beneath it was not a coffin.

Instead, they found a rusted steel box sealed in wax.

Detective Bennett examined the seal.

"It hasn't been disturbed."

Richard recognized the imprint immediately.

The Ashford and Hawthorne family crest.

"Theodore."

Inside the box were several waterproof envelopes and an old cassette recorder.

The first envelope read:

If you found this, Malcolm is still free.

Laura handed the cassette recorder to a technician.

Minutes later, Theodore's recorded voice filled the quiet cemetery.

"Richard... if you're listening, then I failed to stop him."

"Don't waste time looking for my body."

"You need to find the third child before Malcolm Pierce does."

Everyone listened in complete silence.

The recording continued.

"Malcolm never cared about our families."

"He cared about inheritance."

Richard frowned.

"Inheritance?"

Theodore explained.

"Three children were switched that night because Malcolm believed one of them would eventually control assets worth billions."

Vivienne looked confused.

"But how could he know that?"

Richard's face slowly changed.

"He couldn't..."

"Unless..."

Samuel finished the sentence.

"...unless he helped create those assets."

Richard stared into the distance.

"Malcolm wasn't only the hospital director."

"He secretly invested in our first hotel project."

Detective Bennett looked up sharply.

"Meaning?"

"If one child could legally inherit both the Ashford and Hawthorne estates..."

"...Malcolm intended to control that child."

The recording reached its end.

"The answer isn't in the past anymore."

"It's in the future."

"Trust the child who chooses the truth... not the one born into it."

The tape clicked off.

A young forensic officer opened the second envelope.

Inside was a faded map.

Across the top, Theodore had written:

ST. AGNES CHILDREN'S HOME

Samuel gasped.

"It closed years ago."

Laura looked at the map.

"Not completely."

She pointed to a handwritten note.

Records moved. Basement untouched.

Before anyone could discuss their next move, Richard's phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered immediately.

"This is Richard."

A calm male voice replied.

"You should have stayed away from the cemetery."

Richard's expression hardened.

"Malcolm."

A soft laugh came through the speaker.

"You've finally remembered me."

Laura signaled the technicians to trace the call.

They worked furiously.

The voice continued.

"You've already lost."

Richard remained calm.

"I don't think so."

Malcolm chuckled.

"You still believe the third child is the prize."

He paused.

"You're asking the wrong question."

"What should I be asking?"

Malcolm answered in a whisper.

"Why do you assume the third child is a woman?"

The call disconnected.

The trace failed.

Silence settled over the cemetery.

Vivienne slowly looked at Richard.

"The note said..."

"'Find her before Malcolm does.'"

Richard nodded thoughtfully.

"Theodore wrote that."

Laura frowned.

"And Malcolm just contradicted him."

Samuel looked at the cassette recorder in his hands.

"One of them..."

"...is trying to mislead us."

Just then, a forensic officer searching the steel box called out.

"Detective!"

Everyone hurried over.

Hidden beneath the false bottom of the box was a small brass key attached to a faded paper tag.

The tag bore a single handwritten address.

St. Agnes Children's Home – Basement Locker 317

Vivienne looked up.

"So that's where we go next."

Richard nodded.

"Yes."

"But I have a feeling..."

May you like

He looked toward the distant city skyline.

"...someone will already be waiting for us."
