CHAPTER 16 – The Missing Third Child

The folded document lay on the stone floor.

No one reached for it.

For several long seconds, everyone simply stared.

Across the top, the faded blue heading read:

CONFIDENTIAL ADOPTION AUTHORIZATION

Beneath it were three numbered entries.

Child #1: Vivienne Ashford.

Child #2: Dominic Hawthorne.

Child #3: — The entire line had been deliberately torn away.

Not faded.

Not damaged by time.

Someone had ripped the page with precision.

Detective Laura Bennett carefully slipped on a pair of gloves.

"No one touch it."

She examined the torn edge.

"This wasn't done recently."

Richard looked over her shoulder.

"How old?"

"The paper fibers have yellowed."

"My guess?"

"It was torn away decades ago."

Samuel closed his eyes.

"So someone wanted the third child's identity erased from history."

Outside the hidden tunnel, firefighters and emergency crews rushed toward the collapsed section of Level B4.

The hotel shook one final time before settling into silence.

Rescue workers confirmed what everyone feared.

The archive had completely caved in.

There was no safe way to search for Theodore.

Richard said nothing.

He simply stared at the smoke rising from beneath the hotel.

Later that evening...

The group gathered in one of the hotel's private conference rooms.

The wedding was forgotten.

The ballroom had become a crime scene.

Police officers carried evidence boxes in and out of the building.

News helicopters circled overhead.

Every major network was reporting on the mysterious collapse beneath the Ashford Grand Hotel.

Vivienne sat quietly beside the window.

She rested a hand on her stomach.

The baby kicked gently.

For the first time all day, she smiled.

"We're okay."

Richard sat beside her.

"You were incredibly brave."

She looked at him.

"I learned that from Mom."

Richard smiled sadly.

"She would have been proud tonight."

Across the room, Dominic approached.

He looked exhausted.

"I've signed the papers."

Vivienne frowned.

"What papers?"

"Our separation agreement."

Richard looked up.

"You didn't have to rush."

Dominic shook his head.

"I already waited too long."

He placed an envelope on the table.

"I won't ask you to forgive me."

"I haven't earned that."

Vivienne nodded.

"No."

"You haven't."

There was no anger in her voice anymore.

Only acceptance.

Detective Bennett entered carrying a thin evidence folder.

"We've identified one fingerprint."

Richard stood.

"Whose?"

"Dr. Malcolm Pierce."

Everyone became silent.

She continued.

"He isn't dead."

"We found financial activity under multiple false identities."

Samuel whispered,

"So he's been hiding all these years."

Laura nodded.

"Not hiding."

"Planning."

Richard opened the hospital ledger again.

This time he noticed something unusual.

Tiny handwritten numbers had been penciled into the bottom corner of every page.

They weren't page numbers.

They formed a sequence.

Vivienne looked closer.

"Coordinates?"

The cybersecurity director typed them into a mapping program.

A location appeared on the screen.

Everyone stared.

It wasn't another hotel.

It wasn't a hospital.

It wasn't a bank.

It was a small cemetery just outside the city.

Richard frowned.

"Theodore wanted us to find something."

Detective Bennett immediately organized a team.

"We leave at sunrise."

"No delays."

"No press."

"If Malcolm Pierce is involved..."

"...we're already behind."

As everyone prepared to leave, Samuel quietly walked over to Vivienne.

He reached into his jacket and removed a tiny velvet pouch.

"I almost forgot."

She looked surprised.

"What is it?"

"Theodore gave me this twelve years ago."

"He said..."

"'Only give it to Vivienne after she learns she was never the real target.'"

Vivienne carefully opened the pouch.

Inside was a delicate silver locket.

She pressed the tiny clasp.

The locket opened with a soft click.

Inside were two miniature photographs.

One was of her mother, Emily.

The other...

Was of a newborn baby wearing a hospital bracelet.

But it wasn't her.

The bracelet clearly read:

BABY #3

Tucked behind the tiny photograph was a folded strip of paper.

Vivienne unfolded it carefully.

Only four handwritten words appeared:

Find her before Malcolm does.

The room fell completely silent.

Richard slowly looked at Detective Bennett.

She didn't have to say it.

They were all thinking the same thing.

The third child wasn't just a missing name in an old ledger.

She was alive.

May you like

And someone else...

Was already looking for her.
