CHAPTER 13 – The Man in the Shadows

The footsteps echoed steadily through the underground corridor.
Tap... Tap... Tap...
No one moved.
Richard instinctively stepped in front of Vivienne.
Detective Laura Bennett raised her service weapon.
"Police!"
"Identify yourself!"
The footsteps stopped.
Silence returned.
Then an elderly voice drifted through the darkness.
"I was wondering how long it would take you."
Richard's breathing caught.
"Theodore?"
A figure slowly emerged beneath the dim emergency lights.
An older man in a charcoal overcoat.
Silver hair.
A neatly trimmed beard.
He leaned on a polished cane identical to the one found in the parking garage.
When he stepped into the light...
Richard's eyes filled with tears.
"It really is you."
The man smiled sadly.
"It's been a long time, old friend."
For several moments, neither man spoke.
Then Richard crossed the distance between them.
Instead of shaking hands...
He embraced Theodore tightly.
"I thought you were dead."
"I wanted everyone to think that."
Richard stepped back.
"You let us bury another man."
Theodore lowered his eyes.
"I hated every second of it."
"But it was the only way to protect the truth."
Detective Bennett wasn't interested in sentiment.
She stepped forward.
"Theodore Hawthorne?"
He nodded.
"You've been legally dead for twelve years."
"I know."
"You understand you'll have a great deal to explain."
A faint smile crossed Theodore's face.
"I've been preparing for that conversation for twelve years."
Vivienne stared at him.
"You knew my name."
"I did."
"You left me the lockbox."
"I did."
"Why?"
Theodore looked at her with unmistakable affection.
"Because your mother once saved my son's life."
Vivienne frowned.
"My mother?"
"Yes."
"When Dominic was five years old."
"He fell into the lake behind our summer house."
"Everyone froze."
"Except your mother."
Richard closed his eyes, remembering.
"Emily jumped in without hesitation."
Theodore nodded.
"She never asked for recognition."
"She only asked me to promise one thing."
"What promise?" Vivienne whispered.
"If my family ever endangered hers..."
"...I would protect you."
Richard looked away.
"Emily never told me."
Theodore smiled.
"She didn't want a debt between friends."
Dominic stood frozen.
"My mother never mentioned any of this."
Theodore's expression became serious.
"Because your mother never knew."
"It happened while she was overseas."
Detective Bennett interrupted.
"Enough history."
"I need facts."
"You said someone wanted you dead."
"They still do."
"Who?"
Theodore didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he looked down the long archive hallway.
"They're close."
"Closer than any of you realize."
Richard frowned.
"The journal."
"Rachel stole it."
Theodore nodded.
"I expected her to."
"You knew she would?"
"I left it where she could find it."
Everyone stared at him.
"It was bait."
"Bait?" Vivienne asked.
Theodore smiled.
"The journal she stole..."
"...isn't the real journal."
Richard blinked.
"What?"
"The real one has never left this archive."
Theodore walked toward an old bookshelf covered in dust.
He pressed three seemingly random books inward.
A section of the wall quietly slid open.
Behind it stood a fireproof safe.
Everyone watched in disbelief.
"You built a secret room..." Richard whispered.
Theodore chuckled.
"I built several."
He opened the safe.
Inside rested a thick leather journal, far older than the one Rachel had taken.
Beside it lay dozens of folders.
Cassette tapes.
Photographs.
Hard drives.
Boxes of evidence.
Detective Bennett looked overwhelmed.
"What is all this?"
Theodore answered quietly.
"Twelve years of proof."
Before anyone could ask another question—
A slow clap echoed through the archive.
Clap... Clap... Clap...
Everyone turned.
At the far end of the corridor stood a woman dressed in black.
She lowered her hood.
Vivienne recognized her instantly.
"Rachel..."
The woman smiled.
"No."
"My name isn't Rachel."
Theodore sighed.
"I was hoping we'd have a little more time."
The woman took another step forward.
"My real name..."
She smiled coldly.
"...is Catherine Monroe."
Richard's face hardened.
"I knew your father."
"So did I."
Her smile widened.
"And he always said..."
"...you were the only man clever enough to ruin everything."
She slowly raised a small remote control.
Red lights began flashing throughout the underground archive.
Detective Bennett's eyes widened.
"What did you just do?"
Catherine looked at Theodore.
"I've activated the demolition sequence."
Everyone froze.
"The entire archive..."
May you like
She smiled.
"...will collapse in ten minutes."
