Doña Carmen never apologized.

Miguel never left her side.

On the final day, the judge read the sentence.

Doña Carmen was taken away in silence.

Outside the courthouse, Valeria stood holding Santiago.

For the first time in months, she looked like she could breathe.

Miguel wrapped his arm around her.

“It’s over,” he said.

Valeria looked down at their son.

“No,” she replied.

Miguel turned to her.

She looked up.

“It’s just the first time we get to live without fear.”

Santiago reached for Miguel’s finger.
