PART 2 – The First Lie Breaks

The hospital room felt colder after those words.

“Call the police. This isn’t normal.”

Doctor Reyes didn’t raise her voice. She didn’t need to.

Valeria lay unconscious, her face drained of color, while Santiago cried weakly beside her, his tiny body still burning with fever.

Miguel stood frozen.

Then—footsteps in the hallway.

Doña Carmen appeared at the doorway.

Perfect posture. Calm face. Controlled eyes.

“What are you doing?” she asked softly.

Miguel turned slowly. “What did you do to my wife?”

A pause.

Too long.

Then she smiled.

“I took care of her. Like a mother should.”

The doctor stepped between them. “Ma’am, we need answers.”

Doña Carmen’s eyes didn’t leave Miguel.

“She was weak. Emotional. Unstable. A mother like that can’t raise a healthy child.”

Miguel’s voice cracked. “She almost died.”

“She survived,” she replied coldly. “That’s what matters.”

Valeria stirred slightly at that moment.

Her lips moved.

Barely audible.

“They… wouldn’t let me call you…”

Miguel rushed to her side.

“What do you mean?” he whispered.

Her trembling fingers grabbed his sleeve.

“Your mother… she said you stopped loving me… she said I ruined your life…”

Miguel’s breath stopped.

Behind him, the doctor had already reached for the phone.

And this time—she didn’t hesitate.
