PART 3 – The House That Lied

Miguel didn’t go home that night.
He went back with police officers.
The apartment was exactly how he left it—but now it looked different.
Not messy.
Not tired.
Calculated.
Like nothing had ever gone wrong there.
Doña Carmen was sitting at the table drinking tea.
Brenda was scrolling her phone.
Both looked surprised—but not afraid.
Officers searched the rooms.
One of them opened a drawer.
Inside: Valeria’s missing phone.
Battery removed.
SIM card broken.
Another officer found hospital discharge papers—never given to Miguel.
Everything had been controlled.
Slowly.
Deliberately.
Miguel picked up the baby’s tiny blanket from the couch.
Still smelled like fever.
“Why?” he asked quietly.
Brenda sighed. “You always overreact.”
Miguel looked at her. “My son almost died.”
Doña Carmen stood.
And for the first time, her mask cracked slightly.
“You chose her,” she said.
Miguel blinked. “What?”
“You brought her into this family. Against my will.”
Silence.
Then she added:
“She took you away from us.”
Miguel’s voice dropped. “She’s my wife.”
Doña Carmen stepped closer.
“No,” she whispered. “She’s the mistake you refused to correct.”
That was the moment the officers handcuffed her.

She didn’t resist.
She only looked at him like he was the one betraying them.
