Chapter 6 - Vanessa Was Lying to Daniel Too

Westbridge suspended the meeting.
Not because they suddenly cared about me.
Because undisclosed debt and side agreements create risk.
The representatives left with Aaron.
Marcus followed them into the hallway, arguing.
Linda disappeared into the kitchen.
That left Daniel, Vanessa, Rachel, and me.
Daniel looked wrecked.
“Claire, I can explain.”
Vanessa laughed.
“Can you?”
He turned toward her.
“What does that mean?”
She folded her arms.
“You told me Claire’s money was subordinated.”
“It is.”
“No.”
Rachel answered.
“It isn’t.”
Vanessa’s expression sharpened.
She looked at Daniel.
“You said her investment was basically marital capital.”
I felt something cold settle inside me.
“Did he?”
Daniel stood.
“Vanessa.”
She ignored him.
“You said Claire had no enforcement rights because she would never use them against you.”
Rachel looked at me.
I said nothing.
Daniel’s face went pale.
Vanessa continued.
“You said the marriage made her harmless.”
That sentence hurt.
Not because Vanessa said it.
Because Daniel had.
I turned toward him.
“Harmless?”
“Claire, I was trying to get the deal done.”
“So you lied.”
“I simplified.”
Vanessa laughed again.
“You lied to everybody.”
Daniel snapped.
“You benefited from it.”
Her smile vanished.
“Not as much as Marcus intended.”
There it was.
I looked at her.
“What does Marcus intend?”
She hesitated.
Daniel stared at her.
“Vanessa.”
Rachel leaned forward.
“Anything you say may become relevant to litigation.”
Vanessa smiled bitterly.
“Then maybe everyone should stop pretending litigation isn't already coming.”
She opened her laptop.
Marcus had promised her twenty percent ownership in VNC.
The side letter we had seen showed fifteen.
Her actual signed agreement with Marcus showed ten.
Three versions.
Three promises.
Daniel looked stunned.
“You knew?”
“No.”
She rotated the screen.
“Marcus has been cutting everybody.”
My pulse quickened.
“What does he get?”
“Control of the management company through a separate entity.”
Daniel stared at her.
“That wasn't the deal.”
“Apparently not your deal.”
Vanessa looked at me.
“Marcus planned to use Westbridge to strip the assets.”
“Then refinance them into a new development vehicle.”
“Who owns it?”
“He does.”
“How much?”
“Forty percent.”
“Daniel?”
“Twenty-five.”
“Me?”
“Nothing.”
Daniel went completely still.
“You told me Claire’s shares would convert.”
Vanessa looked at him.
“I repeated what Marcus told me.”
I almost laughed.
The men who had spent months assuming I was the naïve one had been lying to one another so aggressively that none of them understood the actual structure.
Rachel asked.
“Do you have documents?”
“Yes.”
“Why would you show us?”
Vanessa looked at Daniel.
Then at me.
“Because I am not taking the fall for Marcus.”
Daniel whispered.
“What about us?”
The room went silent.
Vanessa’s expression changed.
There it was.
Proof without needing hotel receipts.
Not a confession of everything.
Enough.
She said quietly.
“There hasn't been an us in ten years.”
Daniel looked relieved too quickly.
Then she added.
“Except when you needed me.”
My stomach tightened.
Rachel asked.
“Needed you professionally?”
Vanessa looked directly at me.
“Not always.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
I felt the betrayal finally pierce through the corporate anger.
I had known.
Some part of me knew the moment I saw her place card.
Still, hearing it was different.
“When?”
Vanessa said nothing.
Daniel whispered.
“Claire, please.”
I looked at him.
“One question.”
He swallowed.
“Did you sleep with her while married to me?”
No one moved.
Then Daniel nodded once.
The marriage ended in that movement.
No shouting.
No tears.
Just one small nod.
I stood.
Rachel stood with me.
Daniel reached toward my arm.
I stepped away.
“Don't.”
His hand dropped.
“Claire.”
I looked at him.
“You wanted tomorrow’s dinner without me.”
“Congratulations.”
“You got it.”
Then I walked out of the house I owned for the second time in less than twelve hours.
May you like
This time, I did not leave confused.
I left married on paper only.
