Chapter 10 - Marcus Ran First

Marcus stopped answering calls.
His lawyer claimed he was traveling.
The transfer told a different story.
Harrington filed an emergency civil action.
A judge froze Baycrest’s domestic assets.
The three land parcels could not be sold.
Marcus returned to San Francisco two days later.
He blamed Vanessa.
Then Daniel.
Then me.
His attorney argued that the Cayman transfer involved legitimate overseas investment.
The bank records disagreed.
Most of the money came from Harrington.
The district attorney’s financial-crimes unit became interested.
Marcus suddenly wanted a meeting.
We met with attorneys present.
He looked at Daniel first.
“Tell her.”
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“Tell her what?”
“That you approved Baycrest.”
“I approved exploration.”
“You approved transfers.”
“Not to your personal company.”
Marcus laughed.
“You knew exactly what Baycrest was.”
Daniel looked at me.
I knew immediately there was another layer.
“What did he know?”
Marcus leaned back.
“Daniel owns ten percent.”
Silence.
I turned toward my husband.
He did not deny it.
My chest tightened.
“You own part of Baycrest?”
Daniel whispered.
“It was supposed to compensate me.”
“For what?”
“For the value I was creating.”
“Harrington already pays you seven hundred thousand dollars a year.”
“That is salary.”
“And your thirty-four percent equity?”
He said nothing.
Marcus smiled bitterly.
“Daniel wanted something that wasn't tied to Claire.”
The sentence was designed to hurt.
It worked.
I looked at Daniel.
“Is that true?”
His eyes dropped.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because everything became yours.”
I stared at him.
“Harrington was yours before I invested.”
“I know.”
“You asked me for money.”
“I know.”
“You asked me to guarantee the loans.”
“I know.”
“You asked me to stay invisible.”
“I know.”
“And now you're saying my involvement made the company feel like mine?”
“I felt like I couldn't breathe without asking you.”
There it was again.
Breathing.
As if accountability were suffocation.
I leaned back.
“So you secretly took ownership in Marcus’s company.”
“Yes.”
“Using Harrington money.”
“I didn't know he would structure it that way.”
Marcus scoffed.
“Bull.”
Daniel turned on him.
“You said the land would roll back into Harrington.”
“Eventually.”
“You lied.”
“So did you.”
The partnership disintegrated in front of me.
Marcus produced emails.
Daniel had approved two Baycrest transfers.
He knew Marcus was acquiring land.
He knew his ten percent interest existed.
What he claimed not to know was that Harrington funded nearly all of it.
The distinction mattered legally.
Not morally.
Daniel had created a secret financial relationship with Marcus while telling me the company needed more capital.
The same months I wrote checks to stabilize payroll.
I felt something inside me finish breaking.
The affair had hurt my heart.
Baycrest destroyed my respect.
Then Marcus said.
“You think Vanessa was Daniel’s idea?”
I looked at him.
“What?”
“I brought her in.”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“Marcus.”
“Why?”
I asked.
Marcus smiled.
“Because Daniel listens to women who admire him.”
The room went silent.
Daniel stood.
Marcus continued.
“Claire asked questions.”
“Vanessa told him he was brilliant.”
“Guess which one he preferred.”
Daniel lunged toward him.
Attorneys stepped between them.
I did not move.
Because beneath Marcus’s cruelty was a truth Daniel could no longer hide.
May you like
He had not betrayed me because I was weak.
He betrayed me because I was no longer willing to pretend he was stronger than reality.
