Chapter 14 - Vanessa Changed Sides

Vanessa requested immunity from civil claims in exchange for full cooperation.
Rachel advised me not to promise anything immediately.
So Vanessa brought evidence first.
Emails.
Texts.
Voice messages.
Westbridge drafts.
Marcus’s spreadsheets.
Daniel’s messages to her.
Some personal.
Some corporate.
I did not read the personal ones.
I had enough pain without collecting details.
One corporate message mattered.
Daniel wrote.
CLAIRE WILL NEVER CALL THE LOAN.
SHE'D RATHER LOSE MONEY THAN LET HARRINGTON FAIL.
Another.
SHE DOESN'T WANT PUBLIC CREDIT.
WE CAN USE THAT.
I stared at the words.
We can use that.
My loyalty had been converted into financial strategy.
Vanessa watched my face.
“I thought you knew more.”
“No.”
“He made it sound like you preferred staying passive.”
“I preferred supporting my husband.”
She looked away.
“I was jealous of you.”
That surprised me.
“Why?”
“Because he married you.”
I almost laughed.
“You were sleeping with him.”
“Twice.”
“That isn't a defense.”
“I know.”
She swallowed.
“I thought if he came back to me, it meant what we had mattered more.”
“And now?”
“Now I think he came back because I made him feel like the version of himself he wanted to be.”
For once, Vanessa and I understood the same man.
She continued.
“Marcus knew.”
“About the affair?”
“Yes.”
“Linda?”
Vanessa hesitated.
“Yes.”
My stomach tightened.
“She knew?”
“After the first time.”
“How?”
“Daniel told her.”
I felt something colder than anger.
Daniel confessed to his mother.
Not his wife.
“What did Linda say?”
Vanessa looked uncomfortable.
“She told him to be careful.”
Not stop.
Not tell Claire.
Be careful.
I nodded.
Of course.
Vanessa handed Rachel another file.
Inside was the seating plan from Friday’s dinner.
My name was originally on it.
Then crossed out.
Vanessa’s written beside Daniel.
Revision timestamp.
Four days before Linda texted me that dinner had moved to Saturday.
This was not a last-minute change.
They planned my exclusion.
The file contained Linda’s comment.
BETTER IF C IS NOT PRESENT UNTIL AFTER TERMS ARE AGREED.
C.
Not Claire.
Not daughter-in-law.
An obstacle.
Then Daniel replied.
SHE MAY STOP BY.
Linda wrote.
I'LL HANDLE IT.
That message became the emotional core of the entire case for me.
Not because it was illegal.
Because it proved the humiliation was intentional.
The wrong date.
The missing chair.
Vanessa beside my husband.
All designed.
They wanted the deal emotionally completed before I knew it existed.
Then they intended to present me with inevitability.
Vanessa looked at me.
“I thought you knew about the restructuring.”
“I didn't.”
“I didn't know Linda lied about the dinner.”
“Would it have changed anything?”
She was silent too long.
“Probably not.”
I appreciated the honesty.
Rachel asked.
“Why cooperate now?”
Vanessa looked toward the documents.
“Because Marcus tried to blame me.”
“And Daniel?”
Her face changed.
“Daniel asked me to say the affair started after you separated.”
I stared at her.
“We were not separated.”
“I know.”
“So he wanted you to lie.”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Yesterday.”
That destroyed whatever small hope Daniel had of negotiating quietly.
May you like
He was still trying to edit the story.
Even now.
