Chapter 9 - The Crash

Anna’s case was reopened that evening.

Two years of grief turned into something sharper.

Rage.

The original crash report said the truck driver lost control on wet pavement.

He died at the scene.

Anna died twelve minutes later.

No alcohol.

No drugs.

No obvious mechanical failure.

But the truck belonged to a subcontractor used by one of Victor’s real estate companies.

That had never been noticed because Victor’s company was hidden behind another corporation.

Detective Collins did not promise me murder.

She promised investigation.

That distinction mattered.

I wanted certainty.

Police work did not operate on what I wanted.

A forensic mechanic reexamined preserved evidence from the truck.

The brake line had been damaged.

At the time, investigators believed the damage occurred during impact.

Now they were not so sure.

Michael sat in an interview room for six hours.

He admitted helping Victor move stolen foundation money years earlier.

He admitted accessing Lily’s trust after moving into my house.

He admitted signing the guardianship petition.

But he denied knowing Evelyn would deliberately expose Lily to peanuts.

I wanted to hate him completely.

It would have been easier.

Instead, I remembered him holding Lily when Anna’s casket was lowered.

I remembered him staying awake with me after the funeral.

I remembered him making pancakes every Sunday.

People were not simple.

Betrayal was not simple.

That made it worse.

By midnight, police found a storage unit rented under Victor’s assistant’s name.

Inside were boxes of financial records.

Burner phones.

Cash.

Anna’s missing laptop.

And dozens of files from the Hart Foundation.

The largest discovery was a spreadsheet documenting nearly four million dollars diverted over six years.

Evelyn’s name appeared repeatedly.

Victor’s appeared even more.

Then Detective Collins found a folder titled D.H.

Daniel Hart?

No.

My name was Daniel Mercer.

Inside were copies of my employment records.

Medical records.

Therapy notes from after Anna’s death.

Photographs of me drinking at a bar three weeks after the funeral.

A report documenting every minor parenting mistake I had made for almost two years.

Someone had been building a custody case long before the luncheon.

Then the detective turned one page.

A note read:

IF DANIEL REFUSES TO BREAK, CREATE AN EVENT.

The date was six months earlier.

The signature beneath it was not Evelyn’s.

May you like

It was Michael’s.
