Chapter 18 - Evelyn’s Last Hearing

The courtroom was smaller than I expected.

Evelyn sat beside her attorney wearing navy blue.

No jewelry.

No plum suit.

No charity-board smile.

She looked like an older woman who had finally discovered that influence had limits.

Her attorney argued that Evelyn loved Lily.

That criminal charges had not yet resulted in convictions.

That completely severing a grandparent relationship could harm a grieving child.

Then Rebecca stood.

She did not raise her voice.

She played Lily’s smartwatch recording.

Evelyn instructing the server to move the peanut-free dessert.

Evelyn opening my coat pocket.

Evelyn whispering:

“Once he loses custody, the trust will finally be under our control.”

Then Rebecca submitted photographs of the injector recovered from Evelyn’s car.

The prewritten custody petition.

The stolen financial records.

The messages with Michael.

The court became silent.

Evelyn’s attorney stopped objecting.

Finally, Evelyn asked to speak.

The judge allowed it.

She looked at me.

“I never intended Lily to die.”

My stomach turned.

What a low standard for love.

“I believed the reaction would be controlled.”

“I believed Daniel would use the second injector.”

“You stole both,” I said.

The judge looked toward me.

I stopped.

Evelyn continued.

“I made a terrible mistake.”

Rebecca shook her head.

“No.”

“A mistake is forgetting a birthday.”

“What you did required preparation.”

The judge agreed.

The petition for visitation was denied.

A protective order remained in place.

Evelyn would have no contact with Lily while the criminal case continued.

Outside the courtroom, reporters waited.

I ignored them.

Then Evelyn called my name.

She was being escorted toward another hallway.

“Daniel.”

I turned.

For once, she did not look angry.

She looked defeated.

“Anna would hate me.”

I thought about answering gently.

I chose truth instead.

“Anna was afraid of you.”

Evelyn flinched.

“She changed her will because of you.”

“She left recordings because of you.”

“She built protections around Lily because she knew love did not make you safe.”

Tears filled Evelyn’s eyes.

I felt no satisfaction.

Only sadness.

She had spent years believing family loyalty meant unquestioned access.

Anna had understood better.

Love without safety was not enough.

As Evelyn disappeared down the hallway, Detective Collins approached me.

“We received Victor’s plea offer.”

“Is he taking it?”

“No.”

“He wants trial.”

I sighed.

“Of course he does.”

Sarah’s expression remained serious.

“There’s something else.”

“What?”

“His attorney says Victor plans to claim Michael acted alone in the trust theft.”

I almost laughed.

Then she added:

May you like

“And he plans to claim Anna’s crash was your fault.”
