Chapter 5 - Three Weeks Before Anna Died
Anna died in a car crash on a rainy Tuesday night.
For two years, I had replayed that night endlessly.
She had left a board meeting.
She called me from the parking garage.
We talked for four minutes.
She said she loved me.
She told me to remind Lily to bring her library book to school.
Twenty-three minutes later, a truck crossed the center line.
Anna never came home.
The police ruled it an accident.
There had never been a reason to believe otherwise.
Until now.
Detective Collins obtained Anna’s last will.
The amendment was dated twenty-one days before her death.
It removed Victor Hart as successor trustee.
It also removed Evelyn from any financial decision-making role involving Lily.
In their place, Anna named an independent trust company.
I stared at her signature.
“Why didn’t I know?”
“You were primary trustee.”
“The changes only affected what happened if you couldn’t serve.”
There was another clause.
If I died, became legally incapacitated, or lost custody of Lily, the trust company—not Evelyn, not Victor, not Michael—would take control of the money.
I almost laughed from disbelief.
“Their plan wouldn’t have worked.”
“Not legally.”
“Then why target me?”
Detective Collins pointed to the petition.
“Because whoever drafted this used an older version of Anna’s estate plan.”
The one that still named Evelyn as financial guardian.
Suddenly, the entire conspiracy looked different.
Evelyn believed she would control the trust if I lost Lily.
Michael believed he could become guardian.
But neither of them knew Anna had changed the documents.
Unless someone did know.
“Victor.”
Detective Collins looked at me.
“Why him?”
“Anna told him she was changing something.”
I remembered an argument at our house shortly before her death.
Victor had shouted in the kitchen.
Anna had told him:
“You will never use my daughter to fix your mistakes.”
At the time, I thought they were arguing about money he borrowed from their father years earlier.
Now the sentence sounded different.
Detective Collins immediately requested the original estate attorney’s files.
Two hours later, we received a copy of an email Anna had sent.
Subject:
IN CASE SOMETHING HAPPENS TO ME.
My hands trembled as I read.
Daniel,
I hope you never need this.
Victor has been asking questions about Lily’s inheritance.
Mom keeps defending him.
I do not trust either of them with financial control.
If anything happens to me, protect Lily first.
Do not let guilt change your judgment.
I love you.
Anna.
I pressed my fist against my mouth.
She had tried to warn me.
Then the attorney sent one more attachment.
A handwritten note from Anna’s file.
MICHAEL KNOWS.
I looked at Detective Collins.
