Chapter 8 - VICTORIA’S PUBLIC LIE
Victoria was not arrested immediately.
Her attorneys argued that she was elderly, medically fragile, and misunderstood Leo’s behavioral needs.
She appeared on television wearing pearls and a pale gray suit.
She described herself as a devoted grandmother abandoned by an ambitious daughter-in-law.
“Clara left a toddler for two years,” she said.
“We did our best.”
“She returned with armed police and took control of the family company.”
The interviewer asked about the basement room.
Victoria dabbed her eyes.
“Leo experienced dangerous episodes.”
“The room was designed to keep him safe.”
“What about the collar?”
“A therapeutic restraint.”
“What about making him eat on the floor?”
“He refused tables.”
The lies were delivered calmly.
That made them more dangerous.
Thousands believed her.
Commentators asked why a mother would remain overseas for two years.
They called me cold.
Career-obsessed.
Vindictive.
Evelyn advised silence.
I refused.
Not because I needed strangers to love me.
Because abusers depended on public confusion.
I held a press conference at Sterling International.
I did not show Leo’s face.
I did not release footage of his worst moments.
His suffering was evidence, not entertainment.
I showed the forged emails.
The reused videos.
The intercepted calls.
The financial transfers.
Then I spoke.
“I left for Singapore because our company faced collapse.”
“My husband asked me to go.”
“He promised our son would remain safe.”
“Each night, I called home.”
“Each night, I was shown recordings created months earlier.”
“I failed to recognize the deception.”
“That failure belongs to me.”
“The abuse belongs to the adults who committed it.”
Reporters became silent.
I continued.
“Working mothers are often asked why they trusted fathers to parent.”
“Fathers are rarely asked why they betrayed that trust.”
“I will answer for what I missed.”
“Dominic Sterling will answer for what he did.”
The statement spread across every network.
Public opinion changed slowly.
Then Maria’s attorney released one nonviolent recording.
Leo sat on the floor while Victoria ate dinner.
He asked whether Mommy was coming home.
Victoria answered:
Your mother chose money.
Good mothers stay.
Leo looked down.
Then Dominic entered wearing a new suit purchased with company funds.
The hypocrisy was impossible to hide.
Victoria’s television invitations stopped.
Her medical attorney requested a private plea negotiation.
