Chapter 17 - THE APOLOGY HE DID NOT OWE
A year after Dominic’s sentencing, Leo asked about his father.
We were eating breakfast at the low table he had once used during therapy.
He could sit at the regular table now.
He sometimes chose the smaller one because it felt comfortable.
Choice transformed everything.
“Is Daddy in a cage?” he asked.
“He is in prison.”
“Like the basement?”
I paused.
“He has a room with a locked door.”
“But he receives food, water, medical care, and legal protection.”
“No one is allowed to treat him the way he treated you.”
Leo looked confused.
“Why not?”
“Because what he did was wrong.”
“We do not prove that by doing it again.”
He pushed a blueberry around his plate.
“Does he miss me?”
“I don’t know.”
“Did he say sorry?”
“He wants to.”
“Why didn’t you let him?”
“Because you were healing.”
Leo thought about it.
“Can I hear it now?”
Dr. Ortiz helped us prepare.
Dominic recorded a statement under supervision.
He did not ask Leo to forgive him.
His attorney had trained him to avoid excuses.
For once, the words sounded honest.
“Leo, I hurt you.”
“You did not cause it.”
“You were not defective.”
“You were not difficult.”
“I was cruel because I wanted power.”
“I am sorry.”
“You do not have to answer.”
Leo watched the recording twice.
Then he turned it off.
“Do I have to say sorry too?”
“For what?”
“I used to scream.”
“No.”
“You never owe an apology for surviving.”
“Do I have to forgive him?”
“No.”
“What if I do later?”
“That is your choice.”
“What if I never do?”
“That is also your choice.”
Leo looked toward the blank screen.
“I don’t want to see him.”
“Okay.”
“But I want him to know I can walk.”
I smiled.
“Why?”
“Because he said I belonged down low.”
We sent no video.
No photograph.
Only one sentence through Dominic’s attorney.
Leo is standing.
Dominic received the message.
He did not respond.
