Chapter 13 - THE HOUSE WITHOUT THEM

The court returned exclusive possession of my house to me.

I did not take Leo there immediately.

Dr. Ortiz warned that the building contained too many triggers.

We entered first without him.

Every room felt contaminated.

Brooke’s perfume remained in the bedroom.

Dominic’s suits filled the closet.

Victoria’s photographs covered the hallway.

Liam’s luxury toys occupied the playroom Leo had once used.

The basement was sealed as a crime scene.

I stood in the living room where my son crawled toward a plastic ball.

The expensive sofa looked monstrous.

“Sell everything they used,” I told Evelyn.

“The furniture?”

“All of it.”

I kept only what had belonged to Leo before I left.

His crib.

A wooden train.

Three picture books.

Maria’s red backpack.

The house was professionally cleaned and renovated under guidance from Leo’s therapists.

The basement punishment room was removed entirely.

The wall anchor was cut out.

The windows were opened.

I turned the space into a bright therapy room with pale blue walls.

Not to erase what happened.

To prove a room could change purpose.

Leo visited for the first time six weeks later.

He stood at the front door holding both my hands.

His legs trembled.

“Is Grandma here?”

“No.”

“Daddy?”

“No.”

“Brooke?”

“No.”

“Liam?”

“Only if you invite him one day.”

Leo looked into the hallway.

“Can they come back?”

“The locks are changed.”

“The court says they cannot.”

“And I will be here.”

He took one step inside.

Then another.

When he reached the living room, he stared at the empty space beneath the new wooden coffee table.

“Where’s my ball?”

I opened a box.

The cheap plastic ball had been collected as evidence and returned.

I placed it on the floor.

Leo touched it with his foot.

Not his forehead.

His shoe pushed it across the rug.

He looked at me.

“Did I do it wrong?”

“No.”

“Can I kick it?”

“Yes.”

He kicked harder.

The ball struck the wall.

Leo froze.

His hands covered his head.

I waited.

No one shouted.

No one entered.

Slowly, he lowered his arms.

“Nothing happened.”

I smiled.

“You kicked a ball.”

“That is all.”

He kicked it again.

May you like

This time, he laughed.

The sound filled the house they had tried to steal from him.
