Chapter 3 – Smile for the Investors

By eight-thirty, the Grand Pacific Ballroom shimmered with polished elegance. Crystal chandeliers scattered warm light across linen-covered tables, while floor-to-ceiling windows framed the endless Pacific beyond. Investors, executives, and industry journalists filled the room, exchanging business cards and confident smiles.

Banners bearing the Whitmore Renewal logo stretched across the stage.

REBUILDING TRUST. RESTORING LIVES.

Evelyn almost laughed at the irony.

She stood near the back of the ballroom in a simple ivory dress, unnoticed by most of the guests. To them, she was merely Grant Whitmore's quiet wife.

Exactly as he had always preferred.

"Well," Patricia Whitmore said as she approached, "there you are."

Her smile was flawless, but her eyes were sharp.

"I was beginning to worry you'd embarrass Grant by disappearing."

"I'm here," Evelyn replied evenly.

"Good."

Patricia adjusted the pearl necklace around her throat.

"Whatever disagreements you two have, today is about the company."

Douglas Whitmore joined them, straightening his suit jacket.

"Our family's future depends on this partnership."

Before Evelyn could answer, Mallory swept over with Sienna at her side.

"Oh, Evelyn," Mallory said brightly. "You made it."

Sienna wore a tailored white pantsuit, every bit the polished executive. If she felt any guilt after spending the night in Evelyn's anniversary suite, it didn't show.

She smiled with practiced warmth.

"I hope we can all enjoy today."

Evelyn met her gaze.

"So do I."

Grant finally appeared from the hallway, looking refreshed and confident. His eyes widened for only a fraction of a second when he saw Evelyn.

"You got here early."

"I did."

"I'm sorry about yesterday."

He leaned in to kiss her cheek.

She allowed it.

His cologne was the same one she'd bought him for their third anniversary.

"You understand how important this meeting is," he whispered.

"I understand perfectly."

Relieved, Grant smiled.

"I knew you would."

Patricia slipped her arm through Evelyn's.

"See? A good wife always knows when to stand beside her husband."

Evelyn looked toward the stage, where technicians performed final checks on the enormous projection screen.

"I'll be standing exactly where I need to."

A few feet away, Thomas Ellery caught her eye.

Without a word, he gave the slightest nod.

Everything was ready.

The ballroom lights dimmed.

Grant walked confidently onto the stage as applause echoed through the room.

"Ladies and gentlemen," he began with effortless charm, "thank you for believing in Whitmore Renewal. Our company was built on one simple principle..."

He paused, smiling proudly.

"...trust."

From the executive control room overlooking the ballroom, a technician quietly removed his hand from the presentation controls.

He looked toward Evelyn.

She stepped forward.

"It's yours now, Miss Hart."

Evelyn wrapped her fingers around the control panel.

Down below, Grant continued speaking, completely unaware that every word he said was bringing him closer to the moment that would destroy the life he had carefully built.
