Chapter 1 – The Office Above the Sea

The executive floor overlooked the Pacific through walls of uninterrupted glass. The waves below struck the cliffs with the steady rhythm Evelyn had loved since childhood. Her father used to say the ocean never rushed its revenge. It simply returned, again and again, until even stone surrendered.

Thomas Ellery stood as she entered the office.

"Miss Hart."

He hadn't called her that in years.

Neither of them corrected it.

The room remained exactly as Charles Hart had left it—walnut shelves lined with leather-bound ledgers, a brass telescope aimed toward the horizon, and the framed photograph of Evelyn at sixteen, proudly holding the first master plan for Monarch Cove beside her father.

Thomas quietly closed the door.

"I've already instructed security to preserve every access log from the Penthouse," he said. "No records will be altered."

Evelyn nodded.

"What about hallway cameras?"

"They've been copied to an encrypted server."

"And guest invoices?"

"Everything."

She let out the first breath she'd truly taken all afternoon.

"Good."

Thomas hesitated before sliding a thick black folder across the desk.

"There's something else you should know."

Inside were visitor reports from the previous six months.

Grant Whitmore.

Sienna Blake.

Their names appeared together again.

And again.

Weekend reservations.

Private dining.

Spa appointments.

Helicopter arrivals.

Always under business accounts.

Always while Grant claimed to be traveling for investors.

Evelyn stared at the pages without blinking.

The affair hadn't started recently.

It had been unfolding inside her father's resort for months.

Perhaps longer.

Thomas spoke carefully.

"Your father discovered unusual reservation patterns before he became ill. He asked me to monitor them, but he never wanted to upset you until he had proof."

A sharp ache spread through Evelyn's chest.

Even in his final weeks, Charles Hart had tried to protect her.

She closed the folder.

"No one outside this office touches those files."

"They won't."

She walked toward the window, watching fog drift across the ocean.

Then she spoke without turning around.

"What time does tomorrow's partnership presentation begin?"

"Nine o'clock."

"And the ballroom projector?"

Thomas allowed himself the faintest smile.

"It connects directly to the executive control room."

Evelyn looked at her reflection in the glass.

Tomorrow, Grant intended to sell trust.

She intended to define it.
