Chapter 2 – A Perfect Lie

Grant Whitmore slept better that night than he had in months.
The Monarch Penthouse glowed softly under the moonlight, its floor-to-ceiling windows reflecting the silver waves crashing against the cliffs below. Sienna lay beside him, wrapped in one of the plush resort robes embroidered with the Monarch Cove crest.
She smiled lazily.
"You really told Evelyn you were in San Francisco?"
Grant chuckled without opening his eyes.
"She believes whatever I tell her."
"You don't think she'll suspect anything?"
He rolled onto his side.
"Evelyn hates confrontation. She'd rather cry in private than make a scene."
Sienna traced a finger across his chest.
"And after tomorrow?"
Grant reached for the champagne bottle sitting half-empty on the marble table.
"After tomorrow, Whitmore Renewal signs the biggest partnership of its existence. Investors double their funding. My parents finally stop worrying."
"And your wife?"
He shrugged.
"We've been over for a long time."
"You just haven't told her."
Grant laughed quietly.
"I'll handle that after the deal."
Outside, the Pacific wind rattled the balcony doors.
Neither of them noticed the small red light above the hallway entrance.
Not a hidden camera.
A security indicator confirming every electronic keycard used to enter the suite had been recorded to the resort's central server.
At seven the next morning, Evelyn sat alone in her father's office with a cup of untouched coffee.
Thomas entered carrying a tablet.
"I thought you'd want to see this."
He pressed play.
Security footage filled the screen.
Grant and Sienna stepping off the private elevator.
Laughing.
Holding hands.
Kissing before they even reached the penthouse door.
Timestamp after timestamp.
Clear enough that no lawyer could question what they showed.
Evelyn watched every second.
She never looked away.
When the recording ended, Thomas asked quietly,
"Should I archive it?"
"No."
She folded her hands neatly on the desk.
"I want three copies."
Thomas nodded.
"Already done."
A faint knock interrupted them.
The resort's legal counsel entered with two members of the Hart Family Trust.
"Miss Hart," the attorney said, placing another folder before her, "the Board has unanimously agreed."
He slid a single document across the table.
Final Approval Authority
Monarch Cove Strategic Partnership
Authorized Signature: Evelyn Hart.
Grant had spent nearly a year chasing approval from executives in New York.
There had never been a vote waiting in New York.
The only signature that mattered belonged to the woman he had left standing in their anniversary suite.
Evelyn picked up the pen.
Then she set it back down.
"Not yet."
The attorney looked surprised.
"The investors arrive in less than two hours."
"I know."
She closed the folder with quiet precision.
"They deserve to know exactly who they're doing business with."
Outside the office windows, employees transformed the Grand Pacific Ballroom into a stage celebrating trust, integrity, and family values.
Evelyn looked toward the ballroom below.

For the first time since her father's funeral, she felt completely calm.
By noon, every smile in that room would disappear.
