Chapter 4 – The Truth Everyone Missed
Three weeks later, the divorce hearing began.
The courtroom overflowed with reporters.
Everyone expected a battle over money.
There wasn't one.
I wanted only two things.
Custody of Toby.
And freedom.
Jasper looked exhausted.
Dark circles framed his eyes.
His expensive suits no longer hid the weight of sleepless nights.
When the judge asked whether we wished to negotiate privately, Jasper finally spoke.
"Hailey..."
His voice was almost unrecognizable.
"I'm sorry."
"I was selfish."
"I thought success made me important."
"I forgot who stood beside me before any of it existed."
I listened quietly.
Then I answered.
"I didn't leave because you lost investors."
"I left because you abandoned your wife and your newborn son outside a hospital."
"You didn't break my heart that day."
"You showed me exactly who you were."
There was nothing else to say.
The divorce was finalized peacefully.
Months later, Hayes Technologies was acquired by another company at a fraction of its former value.
Jasper accepted a management position under the new owners.
He no longer appeared on magazine covers.
He no longer spoke at leadership conferences.
Instead, once every two weeks, he arrived on time to visit Toby.
He always brought books instead of expensive toys.
He never missed a visit.
People can change.
