Chapter 3 – The Empire Cracks

Monday morning arrived with headlines Jasper never imagined reading.

HAYES TECHNOLOGIES FACES MAJOR INVESTOR REVIEW

His office, once buzzing with confidence, had become unnervingly quiet.

Employees avoided eye contact.

Assistants whispered in hallways.

The emergency board meeting lasted less than twenty minutes.

When Jasper entered the conference room, no one offered him coffee.

No one smiled.

Across the table sat the investors who had once praised his vision.

One of them slid a folder toward him.

"We've completed our due diligence."

Jasper frowned.

"What does that mean?"

"It means Robertson Global has withdrawn every letter of support connected to your expansion."

Another investor spoke.

"You told us your relationship with the Robertson family was secure."

"It was," Jasper insisted.

"My wife—"

"Your wife has filed for legal separation."

Silence swallowed the room.

The oldest board member folded his hands.

"Mr. Hayes, we invested because Robertson Global believed in your leadership."

"Without that confidence..."

He didn't finish.

He didn't need to.

By the end of the meeting, three major investors had suspended funding.

Two banks froze pending credit approvals.

The company's planned international launch was canceled before lunch.

Jasper stared out the office window as everything he'd spent years building began collapsing—not because someone attacked him, but because the support he never appreciated quietly disappeared.

That evening he drove to the apartment.

Or tried to.

The security gate refused to open.

A guard stepped outside.

"I'm sorry, sir."

"You no longer have access."

"My wife lives here."

"Mrs. Robertson no longer resides here."

A moving truck pulled away carrying the last of my belongings.

Jasper watched Toby's nursery disappear through the open doors.

Only then did he understand.

May you like

I wasn't threatening to leave.

I had already left.
