Chapter 2 – The Day Everything Changed

The bus hadn't even reached the next stop before three black SUVs quietly pulled alongside it.

The passengers looked through the windows in confusion.

When the bus stopped, six men in dark suits stepped onto the sidewalk. They weren't loud. They weren't aggressive.

They simply waited.

One of them approached the driver.

"Mr. Robertson sent us for Ms. Hailey Robertson."

Every eye inside the bus turned toward me.

The driver smiled gently.

"I figured someone important would come."

I carefully stood, holding Toby against my chest.

The oldest member of the security team immediately stepped forward.

"Please don't strain yourself, Miss Robertson."

No one had called me that in years.

Outside, a black Rolls-Royce waited with its rear door already open.

Inside sat my father.

Finnley Robertson.

His silver hair hadn't changed.

Neither had the quiet authority in his eyes.

The moment he saw Toby, every trace of the billionaire disappeared.

He reached out carefully.

"My grandson."

His voice cracked.

Then he looked at me.

"What did he do?"

For the first time all day...

I cried.

Not because Jasper had abandoned me.

Because I finally felt safe.

Meanwhile...

Jasper laughed through lunch as waiters served imported seafood and expensive wine.

Priscilla scrolled through social media.

Gillian criticized everything from the restaurant's flowers to the waiter’s shoes.

Then Jasper's phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered casually.

"This is Jasper."

"Mr. Hayes?"

"Yes."

"This is Robertson Global Corporate Legal."

His smile disappeared.

"We're informing you that the black Range Rover currently in your possession has been reported for immediate recovery."

Jasper frowned.

"What are you talking about? That's my vehicle."

"I'm afraid it never was."

"Our records show the vehicle has always been registered under Hailey Robertson."

"It is now being reclaimed."

Before Jasper could respond, another call came through.

Then another.

His assistant.

His office manager.

His accountant.

One after another.

"Jasper..."

"The investors are requesting an emergency meeting."

"The board wants answers."

"Someone from Robertson Global just contacted every major shareholder."

Cold sweat formed across his forehead.

Priscilla stopped eating.

"What happened?"

"I..."

He couldn't answer.

For the first time in years...

He wasn't in control.

Back at Robertson Estate...

My father sat beside Toby's crib while doctors examined my incision.

"You should never have been walking today."

The surgeon looked furious.

"You could have reopened your stitches."

My father quietly thanked the medical staff before turning toward me.

"I stayed out of your marriage because you asked me to."

"I won't make that mistake again."

I nodded.

"I know."

He handed me a thin leather folder.

Inside were documents.

Every investment Robertson Global had quietly made into Jasper's company.

Every guarantee.

Every banking connection.

Every introduction.

Every contract.

Every single opportunity Jasper believed he had earned alone.

He hadn't built an empire.

He had borrowed mine.

"I never wanted him to know."

"I wanted him to succeed because he deserved it."

My father closed the folder.

"Now he'll discover what success looks like without us."

For the first time since meeting Jasper...

I wasn't afraid of tomorrow.

May you like

I almost felt sorry for him.

Almost.
