Chapter 18 - THE WOMEN AT THE TABLE

Two years after the Caldwell dinner, Elena invited Maya and me to Napa.

The employee-owned vineyard had reopened under a different name.

Caldwell had been removed from every bottle.

The workers chose the name Second Light Vineyards.

They said vines often recovered after severe cutting when the roots remained healthy.

We ate outside beneath strings of small lights.

No iron chandelier hung above us.

No one assigned seats according to status.

Elena’s husband sat beside her.

Maya’s children argued over bread.

Noah attended with his younger sister.

Detective Ortiz arrived late and refused a formal toast.

“I only came for the food.”

We believed her until she raised her glass.

“To the first person who says no.”

Maya shook her head.

“No.”

“To the second person who stands beside her.”

Elena added, “And the child who records what adults try to deny.”

We drank to all three.

During dinner, an employee approached me carrying a sealed envelope recovered during renovation of the estate.

It had been hidden behind the old wine rack.

My name appeared on the front.

The handwriting belonged to Adrian.

The envelope contained a letter written before the dinner.

If Claire signs, file the deed immediately.

If she refuses, Mercer will complete the evaluation.

If she calls police, use the video from the apartment.

If she leaves, initiate Phase Two.

Phase Two was not explained.

A key was taped beneath the page.

The employee recognized it as belonging to an old storage facility near Vallejo.

Detective Ortiz took custody of the envelope.

The Caldwells had been convicted.

The main network had been dismantled.

Still, the letter suggested Adrian prepared another plan.

The storage unit was opened the following morning.

Inside were files on me dating back to childhood.

Photographs of my parents.

School records.

My first engineering internship.

And a photograph of my father standing beside Charles Caldwell twenty-four years earlier.

I had been told they had never met.
