Chapter 15 - THE CALDWELL TRIAL
The criminal trial began eleven months after the dinner.
The government charged Charles, Eleanor, Adrian, Julian, Dr. Mercer, Thomas Reed, and several executives with conspiracy, kidnapping, fraud, assault, extortion, identity theft, and financial crimes.
Elena testified for four days.
Maya testified for two.
Noah’s recording was played to the jury.
My turn came last.
Adrian watched me from the defense table.
His scar from the construction-site fire crossed one side of his neck.
His attorney asked whether I had insulted him before the plate was thrown.
“Yes.”
“What did you say?”
“I said he was humiliating himself.”
“Could that statement provoke anger?”
“It did provoke anger.”
“It did not control his arm.”
The attorney suggested the plate slipped.
The prosecutor placed the porcelain fragments on the evidence table.
A forensic specialist demonstrated the force required to break the plate against a human skull.
The jury watched the dining-room reconstruction.
They heard Adrian say, “Get the documents before she calls anyone.”
They saw the forged deed.
The stolen engineering seal.
The hidden camera.
The liability strategy.
Then the prosecutor asked why I called 911 instead of leaving quietly.
“Because twenty witnesses had already decided silence was more convenient than truth.”
“I wanted a record they could not rewrite.”
The defense asked whether I used my professional knowledge to destroy Caldwell Meridian in retaliation.
“No.”
“I used my professional knowledge to prevent the building from destroying itself.”
The city engineer confirmed that emergency repairs prevented likely structural failure during a future earthquake.
My refusal to approve the Caldwells’ design had protected hundreds of future residents.
The jury convicted every principal defendant.
Adrian was found guilty of aggravated assault, fraud, conspiracy, unlawful surveillance, and identity theft.
Julian was convicted of kidnapping, coercion, fraud, and conspiracy.
Charles and Eleanor were convicted on dozens of counts.
Dr. Mercer lost his medical license before sentencing.
