Chapter 12 - THE MAN AT MY ENGINEERING FIRM

Thomas Reed was arrested at our San Francisco office.
He denied knowing Adrian had used my seal fraudulently.
Bank records showed he received four hundred thousand dollars.
The payments were labeled consulting fees.
Thomas had recommended that my firm withdraw from the Caldwell Meridian bid.
At the time, he said the developer seemed disorganized.
In reality, the Caldwells paid him to remove independent oversight.
He retained our preliminary plans.
He gave Adrian access to my digital certification files.
He also created the narrative that I worked secretly on the project after our firm withdrew.
If the structure failed, Thomas would testify that I acted without company authorization.
The Caldwells planned to protect their corporation.
Thomas planned to protect the firm.
Everyone expected me to stand alone.
My colleagues began sending messages.
Some apologized for believing the rumors.
Others asked whether the investigation would damage current projects.
I stopped reading.
My professional license board conducted its own forensic review.
The metadata showed every forged seal had been applied from Thomas’s workstation or the Caldwell basement computer.
My personal authentication device had not been used.
The board cleared me publicly.
My firm offered to reinstate me.
I declined.
Trust could not be repaired by restoring my email access.
I provided the city with an independent structural assessment of Caldwell Meridian.
The tower could be saved, but major foundation work was required.
Construction stopped.
Buyers received refunds.
The Caldwells’ development subsidiary entered bankruptcy.
The Mission Bay condo remained in my name.
The title company placed a permanent fraud alert on the deed.
I changed every lock.
When I entered the condo for the first time after the attack, the rooms felt unfamiliar.
Adrian’s clothes remained in the closet.
His coffee mug sat near the sink.
A framed wedding photograph stood beside the window Eleanor wanted.
I removed the photograph.
Behind it, I found a tiny camera aimed toward my desk.
The basement had not been the only room where the Caldwells recorded women.
They had watched me inside my own home.
The camera’s memory card contained three years of footage.
One recording showed Adrian speaking with Eleanor while I slept.
May you like
Eleanor asked when he would transfer the condo.
Adrian answered, “After Claire becomes unnecessary.”
