Chapter 8 - The Empty Floor

The Ashland tower remained closed during demolition.

Most workers had been removed.

Security cameras showed a man entering through a service gate at two in the morning.

He wore a helmet and reflective vest.

Facial recognition identified Victor.

Police surrounded the site.

Victor climbed to the twenty-seventh floor.

He had access codes from his former position.

Maya Torres recognized the section he entered.

“That is where the defective joints are concentrated.”

Victor carried a backpack.

Engineers feared explosives.

I watched the live feed from the command vehicle.

Victor called me.

“Come upstairs.”

“No.”

“Then I release everything.”

“What?”

“Your father’s private payments.”

“Your experiment.”

“Every deal Hartwell arranged for me.”

I looked at my father.

Arthur nodded once.

“Release it.”

Victor became silent.

He had expected fear.

I continued.

“I already disclosed the introductions.”

“I already admitted my mistake.”

“You cannot blackmail someone with a truth she has accepted.”

His breathing changed.

“You ruined me.”

“You stole from your employer.”

“You hit your wife.”

“You endangered families who might have lived in this building.”

“You keep describing consequences as if I invented them.”

He moved closer to the unfinished edge.

Police negotiators signaled for time.

Victor opened his backpack.

There were no explosives.

Only company files.

He began throwing them into the rain.

Paper moved through the skeleton of the tower like white birds.

“I built this company,” he shouted.

“No.”

“You climbed inside something other people built.”

“And then you weakened the steel.”

Maya entered the command vehicle.

“Tell him the joint beneath him is unstable.”

I looked at the screen.

Victor stood near a section marked red on the engineering plan.

“Victor.”

“The floor where you are standing was built with the material you approved.”

He looked down.

A crack moved through the concrete.

For the first time, he faced the physical weight of his choices.

He stepped backward.

The surface shifted.

A tactical officer reached him before the section collapsed.

Victor was pulled to safety and arrested.

Below, broken concrete struck the empty floor beneath him.

If the tower had opened on schedule, families would have slept above that weakness.
