Chapter 19 - Victor’s Last Appeal
Victor’s final appeal reached the federal court six years after his conviction.
He argued that evidence from our marriage should have been excluded because I acted as an agent of Hartwell Group.
The court rejected the claim.
I had gathered financial records available to me as a spouse and shareholder beneficiary.
Independent audits confirmed everything.
The structural evidence existed outside our marriage.
The bribed officials had confessed.
The steel remained defective.
His choices did not disappear because I had motives of my own.
After the appeal failed, Victor requested a restorative meeting.
I declined.
He sent one final message through counsel.
I understand now that you never needed me.
The sentence still centered need.
I did not answer.
Love was not proven by dependency.
It was proven by the care someone took when dependency existed.
Victor had believed my apparent helplessness gave him permission.
That was the lesson I carried.
Not that every person became cruel when given power.

On the seventh anniversary of the rainstorm, I walked past the old penthouse building.
A new family lived there.
Lights glowed behind the windows.
The doorman recognized me.

“Good evening, Henry.”
He hesitated.
“You know, that night, I saw you in the hallway.”
“I wanted to help.”
“Why didn’t you?”
He looked ashamed.
“Mr. Hayes lived in the penthouse.”
“I thought I could lose my job.”

“What would you do now?”
“Call security before asking who owns the apartment.”
