Chapter 5 - The Woman Behind the Pearls

Kendra met federal agents in a private conference room.

She refused to enter without her attorney.

Her confidence returned whenever someone else paid for the room.

She placed her phone on the table.

Eleanor had sent forty-seven messages after Victor’s arrest.

Delete the vendor chats.

Remove the Ashland photos.

Tell them Olivia threatened you.

Do not mention the Oak Brook accounts.

The final message read:

If Victor falls, you fall first.

Kendra explained that Eleanor introduced her to Victor.

They had not met accidentally at the charity auction.

Eleanor selected her.

“She said Victor needed a woman who looked successful.”

“She said Olivia made him appear weak.”

I felt no jealousy.

Only recognition.

Eleanor had never hated me because I lacked money.

She hated what she thought my lack of money said about her son’s status.

Kendra admitted the affair began two years earlier.

Eleanor provided hotel rooms.

She encouraged Kendra to influence Victor’s spending.

She also created one of the shell vendors.

Hayes Heritage Consulting had received nearly four million dollars.

The company’s only employee was Eleanor.

My mother-in-law had played the helpless widow for years.

In reality, she managed part of Victor’s fraud.

Kendra opened another file.

Eleanor planned to use the divorce to seize the penthouse.

A forged letter claimed Arthur Hartwell had gifted it to Victor through Meridian.

Another document claimed I signed away marital property rights.

Victor had copied my signature from our tax returns.

They believed I had no attorney and no family.

They prepared to remove me with paperwork before the slap ever happened.

“What changed that night?” I asked.

Kendra looked down.

“Victor received an email saying the Hartwell audit had begun.”

“He thought you reported him.”

“He wanted you out before investigators questioned you.”

The slap was not only rage.

It was an attempt to frighten me into disappearing.

Eleanor entered the penthouse knowing I would be expelled.

Kendra wore my robe because they had already divided my life.

Federal agents arrested Eleanor that afternoon.

Reporters filmed her leaving the Oak Brook house in pearls and handcuffs.

She shouted that I had corrupted Victor.

I did not respond.

Kendra received conditional protection for cooperation.

Before leaving, she looked at me.

“You really lived like that for seven years?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“I believed suffering would give me certainty.”

“Did it?”

I touched my healing cheek.

May you like

“It gave me evidence.”

“Certainty came when I stopped excusing him.”
