Chapter 17 - THE FALL OF RICHARD VANCE

Richard finally called Maya at 1:12 in the morning.

“I need you to listen.”

Maya almost hung up.

Then she heard something unfamiliar in his voice.

Fear.

“Adrian knows you visit your mother’s grave.”

Maya sat up.

“How?”

Richard didn’t answer.

She understood.

“You told him.”

“I didn’t know what he was planning.”

“You sold information about me.”

“He offered money.”

Maya closed her eyes.

Of course he had.

“How much?”

Richard whispered, “Twenty million.”

Maya felt nothing.

Not anger.

Not surprise.

Nothing.

Richard had finally exhausted even her disappointment.

“What is happening tomorrow?”

“He wants you at the cemetery.”

“Why?”

“He thinks Catherine hid one final ledger in the grave marker.”

Maya frowned.

“She didn’t.”

“He thinks she did.”

Richard began speaking faster.

“Don’t go.”

“Adrian is desperate.”

“He said if he gets the ledger he can negotiate.”

“And if he doesn’t?”

Richard went silent.

Maya looked toward the security officer outside her room.

“You need to call the authorities.”

“I can’t.”

“You can.”

“I helped him.”

“Yes.”

“If I turn myself in, I’m finished.”

Maya’s voice softened.

“You were finished the moment you decided your daughter’s safety had a price.”

Richard started crying.

For years Maya had responded whenever he cried.

She would comfort him.

Forgive him.

Take responsibility for whatever he claimed she had caused.

Not tonight.

“Call Naomi.”

“Tell her everything.”

Then she ended the call.

Richard surrendered before dawn.

He provided the warehouse address.

Messages.

Payment promises.

And Adrian’s plan.

Investigators arranged surveillance at the cemetery.

Maya was told to stay away.

She agreed.

Adrian arrived anyway.

He found no Maya.

No ledger.

Only federal agents.

He tried to flee.

He made it less than fifty yards.

By sunset, Adrian Vale was in custody.

Howard Lane agreed to cooperate.

Olivia’s immunity negotiations collapsed when prosecutors produced evidence that she had deliberately rerouted Catherine to the false meeting location twenty-five years earlier.

Richard faced separate charges connected to conspiracy, attempted unauthorized entry, witness intimidation, and his assistance to Adrian.

His employer fired him permanently.

His friends stopped answering.

The rented house emptied.

Vanessa moved out of the apartment he had helped pay for.

Olivia stopped taking his calls.

Weeks later, Richard sat across from Maya during supervised visitation with Lily.

Lily colored a purple horse.

Richard looked thinner.

He whispered, “I lost everything.”

Maya looked at him.

For years, he had trained her to measure herself by what he provided.

A roof.

A car.

A last name.

Now he finally understood how temporary those things were.

“You didn’t lose everything because of me.”

Richard looked down.

“You lost it because every time you had a choice, you chose yourself.”

Lily held up her drawing.

“Mommy, look.”

Maya smiled.

“It’s beautiful.”

Richard watched them.

Then he understood the final thing Maya had taken from him.

Not money.

Not reputation.

Control.

May you like

And he was never getting it back.
