Chapter 16 - THE HEIRESS STEPS INTO THE LIGHT

Richard told himself he wasn’t helping Adrian hurt Maya.
He was only helping arrange a meeting.
That was the lie he repeated while taking the key.
The second lie was that he could walk away whenever he wanted.
Adrian needed access to Vale House.
Richard knew details from his marriage that Adrian couldn’t learn from corporate files.
Maya hated crowded elevators.
Lily slept with a night-light.
Rachel’s parents lived in Connecticut.
Maya sometimes visited Catherine’s grave alone.
Richard provided every detail.
For money.
Meanwhile, Maya attended her first Vale Global board meeting.
Adrian’s chair was empty.
Grant sat at one end of the table.
Executives who had ignored Maya’s existence for decades now stood when she entered.
She hated that too.
“Sit down.”
They did.
A corporate attorney explained the trust.
Maya now held voting control over fifty-one percent of the company.
She could replace directors.
Approve leadership changes.
Block major transactions.
She listened quietly.
Then she asked one question.
“How many employees does Vale Global have?”
The CFO checked his notes.
“Approximately thirty-eight thousand worldwide.”
Maya looked around the table.
“Then understand something.”
“This is not a toy I inherited.”
“Thirty-eight thousand families depend on decisions made in this room.”
“I spent years working for tips.”
“I know what it feels like when somebody above you makes a careless decision and you pay for it.”
Several directors shifted in their seats.
Grant hid a smile.
Maya continued.
“I’m not here to destroy the company.”
“I’m here to clean it.”
Her first vote suspended executives tied to Adrian’s shell companies.
Her second created an independent forensic audit.
Her third established a protected employee-reporting system.
By evening, business networks were calling Maya the surprise new power at Vale Global.
Richard watched from his apartment.
The woman he once mocked for working restaurant shifts was now on television discussing international corporate governance.
His phone buzzed.
Adrian.
Tomorrow.
Catherine’s grave.
3:00 p.m.
Richard stared at the message.
He knew Maya visited the cemetery every year on the anniversary of her mother’s death.
Adrian knew because Richard told him.
For the first time, guilt became stronger than greed.
Richard typed a warning to Maya.
Then deleted it.
Twenty million dollars.
He thought about the number.
Then he thought about Lily crying beside the birthday cake.
He picked up the phone again.
Before he could type, someone knocked.
Richard opened the door.
Olivia stood there.
She had been released pending further questioning.
Her face was pale.
“You spoke to Adrian.”
Richard stepped backward.
“How do you know?”
“Because he called me.”
She slapped him.
Hard.
Richard stared at her.
Olivia’s eyes filled with fear.
“You idiot.”
“He isn’t going to pay you.”
May you like
“He’s going to kill you when he’s finished.”
