Chapter 15 - FORTY-SEVEN WITNESSES

The investigation moved beyond family scandal.
Federal prosecutors reopened evidence connected to Catherine’s disappearance.
Detective Howard Lane had retired twelve years earlier.
He was arrested before sunrise.
Olivia was found in a motel outside Philadelphia.
Adrian remained missing.
Then the custody hearing began.
Richard arrived wearing a navy suit and the expression of a man determined to appear respectable.
Maya arrived in a simple cream blouse and dark slacks.
No designer labels.
No entourage.
Grant waited outside.
Maya had insisted.
“This is about Lily.”
“Not Vale Global.”
The judge agreed.
Richard’s attorney portrayed him as a father who had made one regrettable mistake.
Naomi responded with Vanessa’s recordings.
Then came the witnesses.
Rachel testified.
The preschool administrator testified.
Two guests from Lily’s party testified.
Then another.
Then another.
By lunch, seven people had described Richard’s behavior.
Three admitted they had laughed because they felt uncomfortable.
One man began crying when he acknowledged he had watched Maya being assaulted and done nothing.
“I should have helped her.”
Maya looked down.
He was right.
But she also understood why he hadn’t.
People often waited for cruelty to become catastrophic before they believed intervention was justified.
Vanessa testified last.
Richard stared at her with pure hatred.
She described the affair.
The birthday video.
The conversations about Maya’s money.
The custody threats.
Richard’s attorney attacked her credibility.
“You profited socially from humiliating Mrs. Vance, correct?”
“Yes.”
“You disliked her.”
“Yes.”
“You were romantically involved with her husband.”
“Yes.”
“So why should anyone believe you?”
Vanessa looked at Maya.
Then at the judge.
“Because the worst thing I did is already on video.”
“I’m not pretending I’m good.”
“I’m telling you what happened.”
The courtroom went still.
Naomi then played Richard’s voice.
If Maya gets confirmed as the Vale heir, I’m still legally her husband.
There has to be a way to claim part of it.
Then another sentence.
I’ll fight for Lily until she gives me what I want.
Richard closed his eyes.
The judge did not.
Temporary primary custody remained with Maya.
Richard received supervised visitation pending further evaluation.
When Maya walked outside, reporters shouted questions.
“Ms. Vale.”
“Are you taking control of Vale Global?”
“Are you worth billions?”
“Do you forgive your husband?”
Maya stopped.
Naomi whispered, “You don’t have to answer.”
Maya looked into the cameras.
“I have one thing to say.”
The crowd went quiet.
“Forty-seven people were at my daughter’s birthday party.”
“One person hurt me.”
“Many others watched.”
“Money did not make what happened wrong.”
“It was already wrong when I was a waitress.”
Then Maya walked away.
Within an hour, those words were everywhere.
And inside an abandoned warehouse near the East River, Adrian Vale watched the clip on a laptop.
He closed the screen.
Then he looked at the man sitting across from him.
Richard.
Adrian smiled.
“You wanted ten million dollars.”
Richard swallowed.
“Yes.”
Adrian slid a key across the table.
“Help me get to Maya.”
May you like
“And you’ll get twenty.”
