Chapter 4 — Bloodline

The agents moved through the room with calm precision.

Harold shouted.

Adrian begged.

Cassandra cried.

But Evelyn watched it all without flinching.

This was not revenge born in one night.

It had begun years earlier.

With her mother’s ruined name.

With a stolen estate.

With Evelyn being told she should be grateful to marry into the Blackwood family.

She had spent years trying to belong.

Only to realize she had been standing inside a house built from what had been taken from her.

Cassandra suddenly rose.

“You can’t leave me with nothing,” she said.

Evelyn paused near the doorway.

For the first time all night, something almost like pity crossed her face.

“I’m not leaving you with nothing.”

Cassandra blinked.

Evelyn nodded toward the folder.

“There’s an account in your name. Enough for the child. Enough for medical care. Enough to start over.”

Adrian stared at her.

“You gave her money?”

Evelyn looked at him coldly.

“The baby didn’t betray me. You did.”

Cassandra’s eyes filled with tears, but this time they were different.

Not theatrical.

Not calculated.

Real.

Harold was being escorted away when he turned back.

“You think this makes you free?”

Evelyn looked around the dining room.

At the table where they had tried to erase her.

At the chandelier shining over their collapse.

At the ring still lying beside the phone.

Then she answered quietly.

“No.”

May you like

She stepped into the hallway.

“It makes me finished.”
