Chapter 2 — The Woman They Underestimated

Adrian grabbed the folder from his father’s hands.
His eyes moved fast.
Then faster.
The room seemed to shrink around him.
The estate.
The company shares.
The offshore accounts.
The art collection.
The trust funds.
Everything his father had spent forty years building was no longer under Blackwood control.
It belonged to the Blackwood Foundation.
And Evelyn was the sole managing director.
“You can’t do this,” Adrian whispered.
“I already did.”
Cassandra sat upright.
“Adrian, what does that mean?”
He did not answer.
Because he understood now.
The woman he had called weak had spent six months moving silently through their lies.
While he was laughing in hotel rooms with Cassandra, Evelyn had met with lawyers.
While Harold was drafting papers to push her out, Evelyn had found the old company contracts.
While the family smiled at her over dinner, she discovered that Harold had built half his empire using her late mother’s inheritance.
Money he had stolen.
Documents he had buried.
Signatures he had forged.
Evelyn lifted her phone and placed it on the table.
A video began playing.
Harold’s voice filled the room.
“She’ll never find out. By the time she does, everything will be in Adrian’s name.”
Then Adrian’s voice.
“And Cassandra?”
Harold laughed.
“Once the baby is born, Evelyn becomes useless.”
Cassandra’s hand slowly slipped from her stomach.
The video continued.
Adrian appeared on screen beside Cassandra in a private office.
Smiling.
Kissing.
Signing papers.
Planning Evelyn’s removal like she was furniture.
Cassandra looked at Adrian.
“You said she knew nothing.”
May you like
Evelyn’s eyes moved to her.
“She didn’t need to know everything,” Evelyn said. “She only needed to believe she had already won.”
