Chapter 1 — The Last Page

The dining room had never felt so quiet.
Not peaceful.
Quiet.
The kind of silence that came before a verdict.
Crystal glasses stood untouched beside silver plates. The chandelier above them threw cold light across the polished mahogany table, making every face look sharper, older, guiltier.
At the head of the table stood Evelyn Blackwood.
She wore black.
Not mourning black.
Power black.
Across from her, her husband Adrian sat with one hand curled around his wine glass, though he had not taken a sip in ten minutes. Beside him, Cassandra Vale rested one hand over her pregnant stomach, her smile soft and victorious.
At the far end of the table, Harold Blackwood, the patriarch of the family, stared at the folder in front of him.
“What is this?” Harold asked.
Evelyn’s expression did not change.
“The agreement you wanted me to sign.”
Cassandra’s smile grew.
Adrian finally breathed.
For months, they had worked for this moment.
The divorce.
The asset transfer.
The public humiliation.
Evelyn pushed out of the family quietly while Adrian began a new life with Cassandra and the child everyone assumed would inherit everything.
Harold opened the folder.
Page one.
Page two.
Page three.
His confidence remained.
Until he reached the last page.
His fingers stopped moving.
Adrian noticed first.
“Father?”
Harold’s eyes moved across the words again.
Then again.
The color drained from his face.
Cassandra’s smile flickered.
Evelyn finally sat down, slowly, gracefully, as if she had been waiting for the room to catch up.
“You should have read everything before trying to destroy me,” she said.
Adrian stood too quickly, knocking his chair back.
“What did you do?”
Evelyn looked at him.
Not with anger.
That would have given him too much power.
May you like
She looked at him like a mistake already corrected.
“I protected what was mine.”
