Chapter 18 - CONSEQUENCES

The investigators did not arrest Charlotte.

They came with news.

Additional overseas accounts had been located.

Millions connected to Victor’s network were being frozen.

More importantly, several transfers had been traced directly to Richard Sloan.

The case was no longer speculative.

Over the following months, everything moved slowly.

Painfully slowly.

Lawyers.

Depositions.

Financial reconstruction.

Court appearances.

Restitution negotiations.

Ryan cooperated fully.

His cooperation did not erase what he had done.

He eventually pleaded guilty to financial misconduct connected to falsified corporate expenses.

He agreed to restitution.

He lost his position.

His professional reputation collapsed.

The luxury world he had chased disappeared almost overnight.

Sabrina cooperated against Victor and Richard.

Her attorney negotiated reduced exposure in exchange for evidence.

Her company was dissolved.

Her assets connected to fraudulent payments were seized or placed under claims.

She never apologized to Charlotte.

Charlotte preferred that.

A fake apology would have been one more insult.

Victor and Richard faced the most serious allegations.

Years of hidden financial behavior were no longer hidden.

Bennett Global recovered significant assets.

Not all.

But enough.

The divorce became final seven months after the night at The Monarch.

Ryan requested one private conversation outside the courthouse.

Charlotte agreed.

He looked different.

No luxury watch.

No tailored Italian suit.

No driver.

Just Ryan.

“I keep thinking about the ten dollars.”

Charlotte almost laughed.

“Why?”

“Because I stood there.”

His eyes lowered.

“She humiliated you and I stood there.”

“Yes.”

“I don’t understand who I became.”

Charlotte studied him.

“I do.”

He looked up.

“You became someone who believed being admired was more important than being decent.”

Ryan’s eyes filled.

“That’s fair.”

“No.”

Charlotte shook her head.

“It’s true.”

He swallowed.

“Did you ever love me?”

Charlotte felt the old ache.

“Completely.”

That hurt him more than anger would have.

“Do you hate me?”

“No.”

He seemed surprised.

“Hate would require too much of my life.”

Ryan nodded slowly.

“I hope someday you forgive me.”

Charlotte looked toward the courthouse steps.

“Maybe.”

He waited.

“But forgiveness does not mean return.”

“I know.”

She walked away.

Ryan did not follow.

For the first time since their marriage began, he respected a boundary without being forced.

It was too late to save them.

But perhaps not too late to save whatever remained of himself.
