Chapter 1 - THE BOARDROOM BEFORE DAWN

Charlotte Bennett walked through the private corridor without looking back at the lobby.
Behind her, Ethan was already making calls.
Legal.
Internal Audit.
Corporate Security.
Every senior executive currently within driving distance of Manhattan.
Charlotte entered the executive boardroom on the forty-second floor and turned on the lights.
A twenty-four-foot walnut table stretched through the center of the room.
Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked Manhattan.
At the far end hung a bronze Bennett Global Hospitality crest.
Ryan had walked past that crest dozens of times during business trips.
He had never understood what it meant to his wife.
Charlotte placed her old leather tote beside the chairman’s seat.
Then she removed the folded ten-dollar bill from her cardigan.
She set it on the table.
At 11:47 p.m., the first executives arrived.
Evelyn Price, Chief Financial Officer.
Marcus Chen, head of Internal Audit.
Jonathan Harrison, General Counsel.
Security Director Michael Torres.
No one asked why Charlotte was wearing canvas sneakers.
No one questioned why she had summoned them after midnight.
They knew exactly who she was.
“Start with Ryan Collins,” Charlotte said.
Marcus opened his laptop.
“We began reviewing his expense activity after Ethan called.”
“How bad?”
Marcus hesitated.
“That depends on what you consider bad.”
Charlotte’s eyes narrowed.
“Try me.”
Marcus turned the screen toward her.
Luxury hotels.
Private drivers.
Jewelry purchases disguised as client gifts.
Champagne.
Spa treatments.
Weekend flights.
Restaurant bills for two people when Ryan’s calendar listed meetings with six executives.
The total reached nearly six hundred thousand dollars.
Charlotte stared at the number.
“How long?”
“Eleven months.”
Almost exactly as long as Ryan’s affair.
Jonathan Harrison folded his hands.
“If these charges were deliberately misclassified, we may be looking at fraud.”
Charlotte felt no satisfaction.
Only something heavy settling inside her chest.
Ryan had not merely cheated on her.
He had made Bennett Global pay for it.
Marcus clicked another folder.
“There’s something else.”
Charlotte looked at him.
“A consulting company received payments authorized by Ryan.”
“How much?”
“Four point seven million dollars.”
The room became silent.
Charlotte straightened.
“For what?”
“Luxury market expansion consulting.”
“Did they perform the work?”
“We haven’t found evidence that they did.”
“What company?”
Marcus turned the screen.
MONROE STRATEGIC EVENTS LLC.
Charlotte stared at the name.
Monroe.
Sabrina Monroe.
Marcus continued carefully.
“The company was incorporated fourteen months ago.”
“Do we know who owns it?”
“Yes.”
Charlotte already knew the answer before he said it.
“Sabrina Monroe owns fifty-one percent.”
Charlotte looked at the ten-dollar bill sitting on the table.
Suddenly the woman who had dropped it beside her shoe was no longer merely her husband’s mistress.
She was receiving millions from Charlotte’s company.
Jonathan leaned forward.
“Charlotte, there’s more.”
He slid a document across the table.
At the bottom was an authorization signature.
CHARLOTTE BENNETT.
Charlotte’s stomach turned cold.
“I never signed this.”
Jonathan nodded.
“We know.”
She looked up.
“Then someone forged my name.”
May you like
And somewhere forty floors above them, Ryan Collins was sleeping peacefully beside Sabrina Monroe.
He had no idea the night had just become much bigger than adultery.
