Chapter 16 - VICTOR’S FINAL MOVE

The message contained an address.

An abandoned Bennett Global warehouse in Brooklyn awaiting redevelopment.

Law enforcement took over immediately.

Ryan wanted to go.

Investigators refused.

Charlotte wanted answers.

They refused that too.

“This is no longer a board dispute,” an agent told her.

“Victor Hale is a suspect in a major financial investigation.”

Charlotte hated sitting still.

For years, men had underestimated her because she moved quietly.

Now the hardest thing she could do was wait.

At 5:18 a.m., teams entered the warehouse.

Victor was inside.

He was not alone.

Richard Sloan was there too.

So were boxes of corporate records.

Computers.

Bank documents.

Passport copies.

Cash.

The Bennett archive.

Victor had apparently intended to disappear after transferring enough assets to finance his escape.

Richard had come because Victor threatened to expose him.

The partnership had collapsed exactly the way corrupt partnerships usually did.

Under fear.

By sunrise, both men were in custody for questioning while prosecutors considered charges supported by the evidence.

Charlotte watched the news from the Monarch boardroom.

No public details had been released yet.

Only photographs of investigators entering the warehouse.

Ryan sat across from her.

“This is over.”

Charlotte looked at him.

“No.”

He frowned.

“Victor is caught.”

“The money still needs to be recovered.”

“Employees need answers.”

“Shareholders need answers.”

“My marriage needs to end.”

Ryan went completely still.

“Charlotte.”

She placed divorce papers on the table.

His face broke.

“Already?”

“You had thirteen months.”

“I didn’t know you knew.”

“That is not what I meant.”

She pushed the papers toward him.

“You had thirteen months to stop lying.”

“Thirteen months to stop stealing.”

“Thirteen months to decide what kind of husband you wanted to be.”

Ryan began crying.

“I know.”

Charlotte’s throat tightened.

She had loved this man.

That truth did not disappear simply because he had become someone she could no longer respect.

“I’m sorry.”

His voice broke.

“I really am.”

“I believe you.”

Hope flickered across his face.

Then Charlotte continued.

“But being sorry does not rebuild trust.”

He lowered his head.

“Is there anything I can do?”

“Yes.”

“What?”

“Tell the complete truth.”

“To you?”

“To investigators.”

“To the board.”

“To everyone you helped deceive.”

Ryan stared at the papers.

Then signed his name.

Charlotte watched him.

No celebration.

No revenge.

Just an ending.

Then Jonathan entered.

His expression was serious.

“Charlotte.”

“What?”

“We recovered an email from Victor.”

“To whom?”

“Your father.”

Charlotte froze.

“From when?”

“Three days before Elias died.”

Jonathan handed her the printed message.

Victor had written only one sentence.

STOP DIGGING OR YOU WILL DESTROY EVERYTHING.

Charlotte stared at it.

May you like

Her father had been investigating Victor before his death.

And suddenly one old question refused to stay buried.
