CHAPTER 5 — THE TRUTH THEY COULDN’T BURY

Silence.

Even the truck engine seemed to hesitate.

Quincy pulled out his small device.

His hands shook, but his eyes didn’t.

“I recorded everything,” he said.

He pressed play.

And the sound filled the dock.

Naomi’s voice.

Garrett’s voice.

A doctor asking if the baby showed signs of life.

A pause.

Then Naomi:

“Dispose of it.”

The word hit harder than any scream.

Garrett stepped back like he’d been struck.

“No—turn it off—”

But Quincy didn’t.

For three years, a child had carried proof the adults tried to erase.

And now it was alive in the open air.

I looked at Garrett.

Not crying.

Not shaking.

Just… done.

“You watched them throw her away,” I said.

He didn’t answer.

Because there was no answer left.

Only truth.

Only consequences.

Sirens echoed in the distance.

Naomi finally changed expression.

For the first time.

Fear.

And I held Violet tighter against my chest, feeling her heartbeat steady now.

Alive.

Still here.

Still mine.

Quincy stepped beside me and whispered:

“Now they can’t lie anymore.”

And for the first time since the hospital doors opened…

I believed him.

ENDING

That night, the hospital didn’t stay silent.

It never could again.

And neither could they.

May you like

Because some truths don’t stay buried.

Even when a family tries to throw them away.
