Chapter 16 - Under Oath

Daniel looked directly at me when I took the oath.
I looked at the judge.
Claire began simply.
“Mrs. Carter, when did you first learn your husband was involved with Chloe Hart?”
“Four months before Lily’s baptism.”
“Why didn’t you confront him then?”
“Because I was pregnant.”
“And?”
“Because the messages showed financial activity I didn’t understand.”
“I was afraid that confronting him before I knew what he had done would give him time to erase evidence.”
Daniel shifted.
Claire continued.
“Did you prevent Mr. Carter from seeing Lily after her birth?”
“No.”
“Did you tell Lily’s grandparents about the affair?”
“No.”
“Did you cancel the baptism?”
“No.”
“Why not?”
“Because I was trying to protect my daughter from chaos until I had a safe exit.”
Then Daniel’s attorney stood.
He tried to make patience look like manipulation.
“You pretended to be happily married.”
“I pretended not to know my husband was lying.”
“You collected screenshots secretly.”
“Yes.”
“You hired an attorney secretly.”
“Yes.”
“You moved money into a separate account.”
“My salary.”
“Without your husband’s knowledge.”
“After discovering he had transferred marital funds to the woman carrying his other child.”
Several people in the courtroom shifted.
The attorney changed direction.
“Mrs. Carter, have you received mental-health treatment?”
There it was.
Daniel’s planned weapon.
“Yes.”
“For what?”
“A miscarriage.”
The attorney paused.
“How many sessions?”
“Three.”
“Were you diagnosed with anything?”
“No.”
“Did you experience depression?”
“I experienced grief.”
He looked at his papers.
“Would you describe yourself as emotionally stable today?”
I looked at Daniel.
Then at the judge.
“I discovered my husband had another child.”
“I discovered he forged my signature.”
“I discovered he borrowed against our house.”
“I discovered he kept secret accounts.”
“I discovered he hired someone to follow me.”
“And I still managed to feed my three-month-old daughter before arriving here on time.”
A quiet sound moved through the courtroom.
The judge hid it better than everyone else.
Daniel’s attorney sat down.
Then Claire called Patricia.
Daniel turned sharply.
He had not expected his mother.
Patricia walked to the witness chair with shaking hands.
She admitted notarizing my signature without seeing me sign.
She admitted Daniel asked her to describe me as forgetful.
She admitted he had discussed using my medical history during divorce proceedings.
Then Claire asked one final question.
“Mrs. Carter, did Jennifer Carter ever tell you she knew about Carter Consulting?”
“No.”
“Did she ever tell you she authorized the home-equity loan?”
“No.”
“Did she ever tell you she planned to divorce Daniel before discovering the affair?”
“No.”
Daniel looked at his mother with pure betrayal.
Patricia started crying.
The judge continued supervised visitation.
No expansion.
No unsupervised contact.
I should have felt victorious.
Then Chloe entered the courtroom.
She had arrived late.
A subpoena had forced her attendance.
She carried Noah in his infant seat.
Daniel stared at her.
Chloe sat down.
Claire approached.
“Ms. Hart, before we begin, did Mr. Carter contact you after his arrest?”
Daniel’s attorney stood.
“Objection.”
The judge overruled him.
Chloe looked at Daniel.
Then she answered.
“Yes.”
Claire’s voice remained calm.
“What did he ask you to do?”
May you like
Chloe took a breath.
“He asked me to leave the country with him.”
