Chapter 12 - Chloe’s Truth

We met in a coffee shop the next morning.

No babies.

No husbands.

No lawyers.

Just two women who had been lied to by the same man in different ways.

Chloe wrapped both hands around a cup she never drank from.

“I lied at the hotel.”

“I know.”

She looked up.

“How?”

“You said Daniel told you we were separated.”

“He did.”

“But you also knew Lily existed before she was born.”

“Yes.”

I waited.

Chloe took a breath.

“Daniel told me you became pregnant after your marriage was basically over.”

I said nothing.

“He said you both agreed to have one last attempt at starting a family.”

“That makes no sense.”

“I know that now.”

“But you believed it then?”

“I wanted to.”

There it was.

The same sentence Patricia had used.

People believed Daniel because believing him protected something they wanted.

For Patricia, it protected her image of her son.

For Chloe, it protected the future he promised.

For me, for years, it protected my marriage.

Chloe’s eyes filled.

“I knew he was still living with you.”

That hurt more.

“But he said you had separate bedrooms.”

“We didn’t.”

“He said you knew he was seeing someone.”

“I didn’t.”

“He said after the baby was born, you would divorce quietly.”

I leaned back.

“So when you sent messages about ‘our son,’ you knew I might see them?”

“No.”

She shook her head quickly.

“He told me you never touched his computer.”

That sentence made me laugh.

Not because it was funny.

Because Daniel had cataloged my trust and used it as a security feature.

Chloe reached into her bag.

“There’s more.”

She gave me an old phone.

“Daniel bought this for me.”

“Why?”

“So we could communicate without his regular number appearing on bills.”

I stared at it.

“I stopped using it after Noah was born.”

“Why give it to me?”

“Because I went through it last night.”

She unlocked the device.

“There are messages I forgot about.”

We scrolled.

Photos.

Hotel reservations.

Promises.

Plans.

Then I saw a photograph of a document.

A projected divorce settlement.

My name was on it.

The date was eight months earlier.

Before I knew about the affair.

Before Lily was born.

The document described a plan in which I supposedly agreed to sell the house, divide savings, and waive any claim against Daniel’s future business interests.

My signature appeared at the bottom.

Again.

Fake.

I looked at Chloe.

“Where did this come from?”

“Daniel sent it to me.”

“He said you had already agreed.”

Claire would love this.

Then Chloe scrolled farther.

One message appeared from Daniel.

Once the baby comes, Jen will be too overwhelmed to fight about money.

Another.

If she gets difficult, my mom can help convince her.

I looked up.

“His mother?”

Chloe nodded.

“He said Patricia knew you were heading toward divorce.”

I thought about Patricia crying in the hotel.

I thought about the forged notarization.

Perhaps she had not known about Chloe.

But she knew more than she had admitted.

Chloe touched the screen.

“There is one more thing.”

She opened an audio file.

Daniel’s voice began playing.

He was talking about me.

And then Patricia answered him.
