Chapter 11 - Daniel’s Voice

Claire played the recording once.

Then again.

Daniel’s voice filled the conference room.

Calm at first.

Then impatient.

Then threatening.

He told his father the investigation was “manageable.”

He said Harrison Medical Systems would settle if nobody panicked.

He said Jennifer was “emotional” and would eventually accept money to stay quiet.

Then Robert refused to reopen the account.

That was when Daniel changed.

If this goes bad, Jennifer goes down with me.

My stomach turned.

Robert’s recorded voice asked how.

Daniel laughed.

Her name is on the house.

Her income paid household expenses while other money moved through the accounts.

You think investigators care who clicked the button?

Then came the sentence Claire replayed three times.

If I say she knew, they have to prove she didn’t.

The recording ended.

I sat very still.

Daniel was no longer merely trying to save himself.

He was preparing to use me as a shield.

Claire paused the audio.

“This helps you.”

“How?”

“Intent.”

She pointed toward the speaker.

“He is discussing a plan to falsely implicate you.”

Robert covered his face.

“I should have stopped him months ago.”

“Yes,” I said.

He looked up.

I did not soften it.

“You should have.”

He nodded.

“I know.”

By afternoon, the recording was in Detective Lewis’s hands.

The corporate investigation accelerated.

Daniel’s employer terminated him.

His access badges were disabled.

His professional licensing board was notified because some of his work involved financial authorization over medical vendors.

Then the family-court hearing happened.

Daniel arrived wearing a navy suit.

He looked composed.

For someone whose life was collapsing, he still understood presentation.

His attorney argued that I was using marital conflict to block Daniel’s relationship with Lily.

Claire did not argue about the affair.

She barely mentioned Chloe.

She presented the forged loan.

The hidden company.

The frozen accounts.

The threat to implicate me.

And the life-insurance concern.

The judge listened carefully.

Daniel was granted supervised visitation temporarily.

He looked at me when the ruling was read.

There was no sadness in his expression.

Only fury.

Outside the courtroom, he approached while our attorneys were speaking.

“You’re enjoying this.”

I stared at him.

“Enjoying what?”

“Watching everyone turn against me.”

“No.”

He stepped closer.

“You always wanted control.”

I almost laughed.

The accusation was astonishing.

“You created a secret company.”

“You forged my signature.”

“You fathered a child with another woman.”

“You bought one-way tickets.”

“And somehow I’m controlling?”

His eyes hardened.

“You think you’ve won because Chloe is talking to you?”

I paused.

“What does Chloe have to do with this?”

Daniel smiled.

“She hasn’t told you everything.”

Then his attorney called him.

Daniel walked away.

That night, I called Chloe.

She did not answer.

I called again.

Nothing.

Then, just after midnight, my phone lit up.

One message.

From Chloe.

Daniel is right.

A second message appeared.

There is something I should have told you at the hotel.

May you like

Then a third.

I knew about Lily before she was born.
